ESXi 6.7 - LSI 9260-8i RAID Controller

I'm currently on ESXi 6.5u1 (without vCenter) and have MegaRAID discovery working and can see the status and get alerts but I would like to update to ESXi 6.7.

Has anyone come up with a decent way to monitor and send email alerts about RAID, drive, battery, etc. issues concerning a ESXi 6.7 machine that has a LSI 9260-8i controller card? It seems VMWare and Broadcom will never add support for ESXi 6.7.

unable to unmount/delete datastore

Hi,

We have a Dell FX2 blade server. It has 3 host. First 2 host only have SD cards where esxi is installed and its datastores are using the storage of the blade each with 8TB. The third host has SD card with the esxi installed and 2 internal 200GB SSD. First drive is where the vcenter installed and the 2nd drive is where the vsan witness.

I'm trying to unmount/delete the datastores on both Host 1 and Host 2 in order for me to add those datastores on the vsan storage but for some reason it keeps saying that datastore is being used. Here are the things I've done so far

1. disabled swap and host cache

2. disabled HA

3. set both datastores on maintenance mode

4. ensured no vm's inside

5. disabled Storage I/O control

6. removed from cluster

Not sure what else do I need to do?

Thanks

Jeff

Essentials License - add more than 3 hosts temporarily

Due to hardware upgrade I would like to temporarily add more than 3 hosts to an Essentials vCenter, is this possible at all or will it refuse? The add host button is not grayed out anyway...

If not possible, what happens if I add an Enterprise ESXi license to the Essentials vCenter and then want to downgrade to Esssentials? Except loss of licensed features, would this work/be allowed?

TIA

When attempting to enter maintenance mode:

From vCenter:

A general system error occurred: Connection reset by peer: The connection is terminated by the remote end with a reset packet. Usually, this is a sign of a network problem, timeout, or service overload.

Command line running:

esxcli system maintenanceMode set --enable true

I receive the error:

A general system error occurred: Broken pipe: The communication pipe/socket is explicitly closed by the remote service.

vmkfstools --growfs returning Error: No such file or directory

Hi all,

I am trying to grow a datastore.  The reason for this is that I have swapped drives to some larger ones.  The drive was the one where ESXi was installed as well as the local data store.  I started by shutting everything down. I placed the ESXi drive in my laptop along with me new larger capacity drive to replace it.  I booted parted magic from a USB and cloned the disk over to the new one.  After the clone I opened the partitionmanager in parted magic to have it auto correct the GPT size to use the new drives capacity.  Everything looked fine.  After this I put the new drive in and booted back up the server.  Everything started just fine.  I then had to re add the data store, after this I tested my VMs and everything was fine. ESXi was reporting the correct drive size for the new drive.  I just needed to resize the datastore partition to use the unallocated space.

I follwed this guide.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=2002461

Everything went fine up to the last step.  I was able to use partedUtil resize command with no problem.  I chaecked after and the end sector had been correctly changed for the datasore partition.  Also verified the partition was at the end of the table with the free space after it.

When I try the last command vmkfstools --growfs it always comes back with Error No such file or directory.  I have verified it is the correct name and it is listed in /dev/devices/ .

Below is my exact command with the device name and partion number.

vmkfstools --growfs "/vmfs/devices/disks/t10.ATA_____MKNSSDCR240GB_________________________00_MKN1210A0000051844__:3" "/vmfs/devices/disks/t10.ATA_____MKNSSDCR240GB_________________________00_MKN1210A0000051844__:3"

I know the device name looks weird and really long but that's really what it is.  It worked in all the prior commands just fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

Pink Screen on 6.7 Updates - Why?

The last stable update I've been able to use for 6.7 on my machine was build 10176879 -- attempting to update to any of the newer patches / releases has been a failed attempt each time, getting so far as to start booting until appearing with the pink screen as seen in the image below. As far as I can tell the system BIOS is the latest version -- so at this point I'm a little bit lost as to what's causing the issue.

Motherboard: Intel S1200SP

BIOS Version: S1200SP.86B.03.01.0038.062620180344

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1270 v6

RAM: 64GB

Can't even load the host's configuration - the tab is just blank
Right clicking any VM to edit its settings does this after freezing for a while

Datastores disappeared after a reboot

Guys,

Had to shut down the host to put more memory in. The new memory is detected fine, but both my datastores disappeared, so I can't bring the VMs back online.

Can't figure out why this happened or how to fix it.

New HPE DL380 Gen10 servers running the HPE customized ESXi 6.7 software

Management is setup on standard switch, DVswitch used for VM, iSCSI, and vMotion traffic

VMkernel ports are all setup for iSCSI and vMotion with iSCSI binding showing all storage volumes

Reboot a host and the IP address information for the iSCSI and vMotion is gone! The IP address for the management network stays just fine

Not sure if the problem lies with the setup of these new servers (BIOS or NIC settings) or with the HPE customized version of ESXi

Any ideas?

vSphere CPU scheduling vs KVM

$

I know there are differences \ advantages in the way vSphere handles memory in comparison to KVM and I have seem some white papers on it, but what about CPU scheduling?  Are they any performance advantages?   Please reply by sharing some links to good resources if you can.  I don't see much published around this and I want to understand why.

Does VMware have any patents around its CPU scheduler?

Does VMware simply leverage the standard linux scheduler?

Does VMware have any advantage over KVM in the area of CPU scheduling?

I am working for an organization that wants to replace VMware, and before it solidifies this path it wants to fully understand all the details.

Thanks

How to show historic Write/Read Latency on Virtual Disks?

$

VMware ESXi, 6.0.0

As attached, I am trying to find Read Latency (or Write Latency) via Performance --> Advanced tab. It can show me some other historic metrics but not Read/Write latency. Latency on real-time seems okay, but not historic data. It tells me: No performance data is available for the currently selected metrics

Can you please tell me if I can do that, or explain to me on why?

Thanks!

USB passthrough crashed ESX

$

I connected USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 to ESXi 6.7 and set passthrough to VM. The Esx kept rebooting randomly every several hours. If I remove USB 2.0 controller and leave USB 3.0 on the VM, host and VM work fine.

Is it a bug on Esx 6.7?

DELL PowerEdge R440, Dell custom Esxi 6.7 A03. Dell engineer checked, no hardware issue with the server.

I cannot unmount nor delete a datastore

$

Hi,

We have a Dell PowerEdge R440 server running VMware ESXi 6.7 in our company.

It's configuration has the OS running in a SD card and a 3 drives in RAID 5 as the storage for the VMs.

As we added more VMs (we had 5) the performance got really bad, so we decided to do a disk upgrade.

After measuring the performance of that server with Live Optics, we decided to add another drive and have RAID 10 instead of RAID 5.

The plan was:

1) Backup all the VMs on the Dell server - Done

2) Erase the VMs on that server - Done

3) Unmount and delete the LocalStorage-1 datastore on VMware- Not working

4) Break the RAID 5 running with 3 disks on the Dell server

5) Turn off the server and add the new drive to the Dell server

6) Build the RAID 10 running with 4 disks on the Dell server

7) Create the LocalStorage-1 datastore on VMware

8) Restore all the VMs to the Dell server

However, when I tried to unmount or delete the LocalStorage-1, it simply wouldn't work.

Inspecting the configuration with more details, I found 3 devices: the SD card, the RAID 5, and a 18GB one that I don't know what is.

If I try to delete the current partition on the RAID 5 device it also doesn't work.

If I browse the local storage, I can see 2 folders, but can delete just the .locker one (which returns if I reboot the server)

So, it seems that there is something writing to that local storage and for that reason I can't delete it.

However, I already looked at all the configurations and couldn't find what that was.

The only one I found is an advanced setting that still points to that datastore, but it doesn't accept me to change its setting and point to a different location

Does anybody have any suggestion?

Thanks,

Carlos

vDS health check showing "Non-IP Hash Mismatch"

$

I have two 10 gig connections into a Virtual Distributed switch. We are using this for iSCSI, vMotion, and VM traffic. The Juniper switch ports that provide connectivity are configured as trunks ports, no LACP or aggregation.

  • We use iSCSI port binding and both VMkernel ports are configured as "Route based on originating virtual port"
  • We use multi-nic vMotion and both VMkernel ports are configured as "Route based on originating virtual port"
  • Our VM portgroup is configured with "Route based on physical NIC load"

Everything has been working fine for the past 6 months when we put these new HPE servers in. We decided to enable Virtual Distributed Switch Health check and it came up with several problems including Non-IP Hash Mismatch under teaming and failover. This is either a mis-configuration on our part or the vDS health check is buggy and not reliable. We are running ESXi 6.7 update 1. What are you seeing in your vDS health check?

UCS C220 and C210 firmware/driver question

$

I'm new to the Cisco server hardware, my experience is mostly with HP, and I wanted to update the firmware on two servers we have here- a Cisco UCS C220 and C210.  How does everyone else usually upgrade the firmware/drivers on these?  Do they just boot into the HUU ISO, install everything and then run the Cisco ESXi installer?  Can you run the huu before updating the CIMC firmware?

Thanks!
