VMWare 6.5.0 (Build 5310538) serial/com port passthrough issues.

Hi All,

Go easy on me, i'm new around here.

We had a VM with access control software on an old ESXi server (5.5). It was working fine and had a USB to Serial converter that then had a card reader attached. It was setup with the USB controller added to the VM along with the USB device itself (converter adaptor) also added to the VM. It was COM3, which we put into the settings of our access control software and bam, all working. Windows 10 64bit.

A couple of weeks ago we acquired a new server preinstalled with ESXi 6.5.0 from Dell (brand new). After configuration we migrated VMs using Veeam (company too cheap to buy vmotion). I also upgraded the VM hardware of said access control server to 11.

Since then, the reader connected to the VM doesn't work. I have double and triple checked settings but when I open putty and connect to the com port I see no output when the card is scanned. I have even tried removing the usb-serial converter altogether and plugging the readers serial plug directly into the server and passing that serial port through to the VM. Still no change.

The access control company have sent 2 engineers whom have sent replacement readers and adaptors, no change. They have said the issue is with the VM/Server (which they don't support) as they checked the readers that were taken away and it works.

I have even booted into the VM's BIOS to enable the serial ports (instead of leaving them to auto). Again, no luck.

Any ideas?
