We have ESXi 4.1 running SBS 2011. We have been trying to get a fax modem to work. We have tried 3 different types of external USB modems and another type of internal PCIe modme. Although they show up in windows device manager and can be queried for diagnostics purposes, we cannot get them to actually dial any numbers or receive any faxes. Some modems state there was no dialtone while others detect a dialtone and say dialing and eventually fail with "No Answer".
Even if we have the modem dial a cell phone number or any other phone number, the number never rings.
I'm begining to think that PCI passthrough, and USB passthrough is very limited in devices. Has anyone ever been able to get modems to work with a virtual server?
