ESXi Network Interfaces | Host only | Host to Host

$

Hello forum, this is my first time posting here so please bare with. I have had a trawl through the documentation but I can't seem to find what I am looking for or I am referencing it incorrectly.

What I am trying to achieve is to create an NIC on a host which has nothing plugged into it. I want to do this so that I can create another host and do the same. I then want to join these hosts together. The same as in the real as plugging two devices together using a crossover cable. Is this possible?

I am running Cisco IOSv which is peering via BGP to my real routers, instead of using a vSwitch I need to use Cisco Nexus L2V as the switch due to some of the features this offers. I need to assign virtual ports to it to plug in the VM's. So a virtual Router on a stick (ROAS) setup.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction? Thanks very much.

Install ESXi 6.5 on R730 with Intel X710

Hello All,

After install ESXi 6.0 via "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0.update02-4192238.x86_64-Dell_Customized-A04" on Dell PowerEdge R730, everything is okay !!!

But, if I try to install ESXi 6.5 via "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0-4564106.x86_64-Dell_Customized-A00" on Dell PowerEdge R730, my vmnic0 and vmnic1 (Intel X710 DP 10Gb DA/SFP+) are not working !!!

Does anybody know the solution ?

Thanks for your reply.

how to install Mellanox connectx-4 in ESXi 6.7

$

Hi

I cannot get ESXi 6.7 to install Mellanox ConnectX-4 in ESXi 6.7

I the UI on the ESXi I can see the Mellanox card under manage->hardware.

But it will not show up under NIC or under HBA, not sure where to find it.

If I from the CLI run the command

esxcli hardware pci list

I can also see the ESXi have found the controller correctly.

But as you can see Module ID and Module Name has not been set.

   Module ID: -1

   Module Name: None

I use the build in driver in ESXi 6.7 as it should support this controller and I have upgraded it to newest firmware so it fits with HCL

Any way to fix this?

Creating NVMe datastore in ESXi 6.7

$

Hi,

I'm just getting started in ESXi so please bear with me if this question appears rather simplistic!

I've installed ESXi 6.7 and I have one Centos 7.4 VM running.  I now want to create a datastore using a NVMe device as a backing store  so that multiple VMs can access this datastore (in the same way that  my hard disk datastore is used by multiple VMs).

In my ESXi browser window under Host->Manage->Hardware my NVMe device is listed, so ESXi detects my NVMe drive. However in Storage->Adapters I see only vmhba0 and vmhba1. I don't see any NVMe adapters. Thus when I try to create a new datastore, it can't find any NVMe adapter.

What do I have to do create a NVMe adapter?

thanks for your help

Seems to be the case that when mounting NFS 4.1 using Windows Server 2012 R2 as the endpoint people are getting the following error:

A snippet from the NFS 4.1 RFC has this to say about RECLAIM_COMPLETE  (RFC 5661 - NFS Version 4 Minor Version 1 - Page 567)

Whenever a client establishes a new client ID and before it does the

first non-reclaim operation that obtains a lock, it MUST send a

RECLAIM_COMPLETE with rca_one_fs set to FALSE, even if there are no

locks to reclaim. If non-reclaim locking operations are done before

the RECLAIM_COMPLETE, an NFS4ERR_GRACE error will be returned.

Similarly, when the client accesses a file system on a new server,

before it sends the first non-reclaim operation that obtains a lock

on this new server, it MUST send a RECLAIM_COMPLETE with rca_one_fs

set to TRUE and current filehandle within that file system, even if

there are no locks to reclaim. If non-reclaim locking operations are

done on that file system before the RECLAIM_COMPLETE, an

  NFS4ERR_GRACE error will be returned.

I ran a capture during the mount which shows that the ESXi host sent a RECLAIM_COMPLETE with rca_one_fs set to FALSE, later it sends another RECLAIM_COMPLETE with rca_one_fs set to TRUE and a filehandle specified.  This looks like the correct behavior.

first-reclaim.png  second-reclaim.png

Last of all, back in the RFC is this little tidbit:

RECLAIM_COMPLETE should only be done once for each server instance or

occasion of the transition of a file system. If it is done a second

time, the error NFS4ERR_COMPLETE_ALREADY will result. Note that

because of the session feature's retry protection, retries of

COMPOUND requests containing RECLAIM_COMPLETE operation will not

  result in this error.

The screenshots also appear to show that both RECLAIM_COMPLETE operations are COMPOUND, so it seems to me that ESXi is doing what it is supposed to do, but the NFS server is sending back an error when it shouldn't which is causing the host to fall back to read-only access mode.

Any input from the wider community?  Happy to be stood corrected!

I completed installation of Vmware Esxi 6.5 on my server HP DL380 g9 with 4 network adapters so I have Three port group.
1.Managment network.
2.Lanzone
3.Wanzone
...........
Lanzone has its own virtual switch called LanvSwitch
Wanzone has its own virtual switch named WanvSwitch
..............
LanvSwitch has one uplink mapped to vmnic1
WanvSwitch has one uplink mapped to vmnic2
..............
All ports of the server connected to one physical switch ...Dlink
..............

Virtual machine of Sophos has many network adapters.
I made adapter 1 to LanZone portgroup. And Adapter 2 to WanZone portgroup.
..........
I can see preconfigured ips in sophos. I tried to reach all from the physical network of switch (Dlink) mentioned above but no success.

Did you observe any mis-configured issue above?

I could not access the virtual machine from my physical network, why ?

How do I get a license for ESXi 4.1?

Latest version of ESXi is not compatible with my old Dell T7400. 4.1 installs and runs, but the license number I got for my 6.7 download won't work with my 4.1 install.

Is it possible to still get a license for 4.1?

Thanks,

Chris

NFS Storage , ESXi 6.7

hi community,

Am I able to do this.

I have a spear server and wanted to have 8 SSD drives in a RAID 5 , and have a quad network card installed. can I attach the dell blade servers in a FX2s chassis directly to the other server for storage for eg like a iSCSI. would that work over the ethernet so I can directly connect them together without a switch or a router, and use the RAID 5 storage on the other server to install VMs onto.

I wanted to move an NTFS-formatted 4TB SATA drive from a Lubuntu machine to my Windows Server 2008 VM (running on an ESXI 6.5 host - Dell Optiplex 3010). I installed the drive in the server, then mapped it as as RDM. The Windows VM can see the drive, but can't read the content (it was about 80% full of files) - I get "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Any ideas??

Could anyone please help me a bit? I don't know at all, what's going on and how should I continue with the installation.

ESXi 6.7 - OVF Export Fails on VMDK export

$

I just installed VMware ESXi on a Dell R620 to test with. I have an opensuse 42.3 Linux guest VM that is powered off. When I go to export as OVF I can fetch the .ovf file, but it fails to fetch the associated VMDK. In Google Chrome I get "Failed - Network Error." When I use Firefox it fetches about 80-90MB of the VMDK and then stops. There is no error shown. On the ESXi host, it shows the request for the export but does not log any actual error.

I tried downloading the VMDK via the datastore browser but that didn't fetch the actual vmdk.

Hi all,

We have one CISCO c240 rack mount server and one EMC VNX3200.

EMC VNX3200 has four 10 Gb/s Ethernet Ports. Servers has four 1GbE ports. We want to setup 10 GB connectivity for the iSCSI storage. Can any one tell us, if we procure  and install 10GB port on server, can we directly connect server to storage 10GB connection for iSCSI storage. EMC VNX3200 is the iSCSI storage.

Do we need to buy any extra switch to connect server and storage 10GB connection ?

Using a USB drive to backup VM in ESXi 6.5

$

Hi all!

I'm using an ESXi 6.5 with some virtual machines to conduct some use case at university. I do not have a full structure nor the ESXi is a production machine (this means I can stop the service as often and as long as I need).

The problem is: I would like to backup the VMs. I tried to export the VMs in OVA format but I always got a network error, so I decide to back them up using an attached USB drive (an external HD from Seagate). To accomplish that, I enabled SSH and SSH to the host, but I could not see the USB HD nor any device like /dev/sd*

Can you help me?

Thanks!

Maas DNS not working on Vmware ESXi

Hi,

I have a MAAS setup that works perfectly fine as a VM on Vmware Workstation. When I do a nslookup on a node known by MAAS, the resolution is successfull (with maas node IP in resolv.conf, followed by "search maas").

But when I migrate this exact same Maas setup into Vmware ESXi, I have systematically a "NXDOMAIN" error. A nmap performed from another vm running on ESXi give me this :

Nmap scan report for maas.maas (192.168.2.2)
Host is up (0.000092s latency).
Not shown: 993 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE

80/tcp open http
3128/tcp open squid-http
3260/tcp open iscsi
7911/tcp open unknown
8000/tcp open http-alt

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.03 seconds

So, my dns service is running. I can't figure out what is going on !

Diskpart 2003 server C partition

$

The posts and instructions I have read regarding increasing the provisioned size of a virtual disk say I have to shut down the virtual server the disk is on, add the disk to another virtual server, change the provisioned size then shutdown that virtual server, remove the added disk, and re-add the disk to the original virtual server then run diskpart on the original virtual server to extend the partition.

Can I just change the provisioned size on the powered on virtual server in edit settings then run diskpart on that virtual server and reboot to extend the partition size?

Thanks

Intel NUC7 i7 DNHE & VMWare 6.5, 6.7: Installation hangs

$

Hi all,

I just got a brand new Intel NUC7.

When installing the device, the procedures always hangs (or: seems to hang) at "initializing storage stack".

I have done some searching but I didn't find any strategy on how to handle this.

For starters, I was also trying to get a more verbose output during installation (like what exactly is stuck at that message, see above) etc., but also I didn't find any boot time option for the installer to get a more detailled output.

Configuration is:

- 32GB RAM

- Samsung 960 Pro 512 M.2

- Seagate 2TB HDD

Any help welcome, since without ESXi on that system I would need to send it back again ;(

Cheers!
