Hi,

I have a VM with guest OS (Linux).

From within guest OS (linux), is there a way to find UUID of the VM on which guest OS is running?

Thanks

ESXi 5.5 to 6.0 U3 - can't find the datastore with ESXi installation

Hello, I have a DL380 G6 with ESXi 5.5 and I want to upgrade it to 6.0 U3. But the ESXi installer can't find Datastore1 (here is the ESXi installation). All other Datastores can be found. And the other datastores are the same HDDs.

When ESXi is started, I can see Datastore1 and work with it.

Can somebody tell me what I can do?

I also thought about to install ESXi on one of the other disks, but then there is still the other ESXi installation at the start.

How to add datastore that is physically installed in another esxi?

$

I have 2 hosts ESXi 5.1.

On the first host, I installed two disks in raid 0 and added it as a third datastore. But on the second host I can't see this new datastore.

These two hosts are part of the same cluster. How can I solve this?

ESXi 6.0 Windows Server 2016 OpenGL 2.0

$

I'm looking for a bit of advice on the possibilities of supporting OpenGL 2.0 on a Windows Server 2016 VM running on an ESXi host.

Currently the VM reports it is capable of OpenGL 1.1, but I need 2.0 support for a particular application. It's not doing 3D, but the interface is rendered in OpenGL 2.0, so support is required.

I've tried various things, like switching the Client OS to Windows 10 in settings to allow me to enable 3D video, and changing the driver to WDDM, but cannot seem to get anything to work. The host machines are HP Proliant servers, with built in graphics, so I don't know if this is the problem.

I'm really looking for some guidance on what I'd need to do to make this work, even if the answer is new hardware.

Thanks

Dell R740 With ESXi 6.5 Problems

$

Hello community,

Since  a few weeks we have 5 Dell R740 servers with Tesla NVidia cards and ESXi 6.5 installed on it. We use these servers to deploy VDI Windows 10 computers on it.

We have Dell R730 servers with ESXi 6.0 installed on it and no problems there. (same VCenter but in different Clusters) VDI image is the same.

At random these new servers are crashing.

When the Tesla cards are placed in the machine the error results in a PSOD.

When we remove the Telsa cards, the systems are still failing, but then with a complete system stop and a CPU1 or CPU2 error in the logging most of the time.

So It isn't just the Telsa cards wich is giving the problems.

We have tried the Dell ESXi 6.5, 6.5 cu1 and 6.5 cu2 image, still the same results.

We have updated the Bios version to 1.3.7 and updated the iDrac to version 3.18.18.18, still the same results.

Hardware is replaced by Dell on several servers (CPU, Mainboard, PSU, NIC, SD module) but no results.

It isnt just a hardware problem it seems.

We have send several VMWare logs and Dell system logs to Dell support. They are still investigating but so far no results.

Maybe some of you have an idea or had a similar problem.  Please let me know!

Thnx in advance!

VMDKs get disconnected during compatibility upgrade

It appears the VMDKs are getting disconnected during virtual hardware upgrades.   I thought it was due to CBT but can't seem to find a KB on the topic.

Does anyone know what causes this and what the fix is?   you can re-attach the VMDKs, but you typically don't realize it happened until you power on the VM, and if DRS moves the VM to another host you can't re-attach the VMDKs until you migrate it back to the original host it was on when you performed the compatibility upgrade.

Thanks in advance for assisting.

ESXi 6.7 kernel panic during Heap_Free in dlmalloc

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I couldn't find a bug tracker for ESXi.

The host has been running ESXi 6.0 and now 6.7 without issue for a couple years. After reboot, it's all back to normal; so, I don't think it's a hardware problem. I wasn't doing anything in particular when this happened. I.e., no easy repro.

Vmware Tools defect since Version 10.x.x with server 2012R2 msg.snapshot.error-QUIESCINGERROR

Hello Community,

I am facing with a Snapshot Problem with one Single Server 2012R2 VM with Exchange 2013.

Environment:

Dell R430, ESXi 6.0 U3 5572656.

The Error Message is the following and the Snapshot failes:

Create virtual machine snapshot VM-Exchange

An error occurred while saving the snapshot:

msg.snapshot.error-QUIESCINGERROR.

I hoped the latest update fixed this as the release notes says:

VMware Tools 10.1.10 Release Notes

Quiesced snapshots of Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machines with VMware Tools 10.1.0 fails with an error.

This issue is resolved in this release.

But again last night, the Problem still exist.

To be more complicated, the Problem is rather intermitted.  3-4 Backups with snapshot works, the error occurs.

I just testet 3 Snapshot after upgrade to 10.1.10 an "no error" , ? Problem solved? ... not yet.

So now i am back with VmTools 9.10.5.

Im gettting this Problem with every Tools Version 10.x .  After 5-7 Days (Nightime Backup Windows)  the Problem occurs,

And before my Test of Version 10.1.10 yesterday the Backup runs for about 4 Weeks with Version 9.10.5 without any snapshot error.

So for me it is rather clear the Problem has to do with Version 10.x and some changes.

Is there someome with a hint?  :-)

Drive recovery, help needed

$

Hi all,

we had a power outage that seems to have damaged our old ESXI (5.0.0) installation, the SSD (single drive, not part of a RAID) we used for it seems unreadable and hence all guest systems are shown as "unknown".

I tried to access the SSD by attaching it to a linux machine (via USB) and to use vmfs-fuse. Unfortunately it shows me:

VMFS VolInfo: invalid magic number 0x00000000

VMFS: Unable to read volume information

Trying to find partitions

Unable to open device/file "/dev/md126".

Unable to open filesystem

The magic number looks no good, what I already found out.

We have a new server in place already (esxi 6.5.0) where I, prior to trying the above, attached the drive, activated it as volume on the controller (without initialising it) and bootet it up. Esxi recognizes the drive but NOT the data on it, so no partition information / datastore. It could be due to the big version jump or just because the drive is toast.

Any chances I can recover the vmdk files on the drive? Anything left I could try? We have backups on client-level, yes, but the data of the last almost 24 hours is not part of the backup, so I would really appreciate getting at least the content of the databases from there.

Any help and/or hint are highly appreciated.

Why did thin-provisioned VMDK suddenly grow, and why doesn't WebUI reflect new size after 'punchzero'?

$

0

This is a two part question;

First, I have an ESX 6.5.0 Update 1 (Build 5969303) host, no vCenter, with a VM containing two thin-provisioned VMDKs (150GB and 5TB) on a local storage (SSD RAID array) datastore, both of which ballooned up to 100% of their provisioned capacity. I shrunk them back down with vmkfstools --punchzero and they are now consuming 2GB and 2.3TB (as per provisioned space shown in datastore browser and output of stat from the shell.) However in the VM list and the VM summary page within the ESXi web interface it still shows this VM consuming 5.15TB. Veeam Backup & Replication also sees this VM size as 5.15TB, so presumably it's going to replicate 5.15TB of blank space - or maybe not, and it's just reading the same metadata or whatever ESXi is using to see the wrong size? This VM was previously only consuming 2.5TB, and the replicas with Veeam were the same. Why doesn't the WebUI reflect the shrunken file size, and is there a way to fix this?

Second, I don't understand why the VMDks suddenly consumed all their space? I know what triggered it, which was creating a snapshot, installing Windows Updates, then deleting the snapshot. However the sparse file for this snapshot was only 20GB. The "delete snapshot" task ran for multiple hours, and at some point the datastore ran out of space and the disks were marked as requiring consolidation. I freed up some space by removing a few replica VMs then ran the Consolidate Disks action, which took multiple more hours to complete. But why did it fill up the datastore like that? Is there something in the logs I can look for to help understand what happened, or is this expected for some reason? I did the same set of Windows Updates on two other VMs (one of which was on the same host and datastore) and their VMDKs did not grow like this.

Hello all,

1、Suppose i install my ESXi Server using a server vendor-customized ISO, can i download the patches/updates from VMware and apply them to the server ?

2、Suppose i install my ESXi Server using VMware standard ISO, can i upgrade or patch it using a server vendor-customized ISO image ?

Hi,

I've lost a datastore.

In my server, I have an SDD and 3 hard drives.
Suddenly, one of the hard disks disappeared from the datastore. Unfortunately, I can not put it back up.
I followed the following procedure: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2046610

See the hard drive disk in bold below :

Hi All,

I am plan to convert P2V for MSCS cluster on ESXi 4.1 using VMware Converter 4.3. It is a two node custer connected with HPXP storage and DR LUN replication also in progress.

1) C:\ D:\ (Local Disk)

2) Q: \ F:\ (Cluster Data Disk)

3)  two 64MB disk in unreadable mode (HP CMD Disk)

4) the same cluster data disk is unreadable mode in disk management console (DR replicating LUN)

This above configuration are configured in Passive node.

Please let me know what is process of doing MSCS P2V on ESXi 4.1.

What are critical step need to be carried out before and after migration

Convert Hyper-V Machines to ESXI

VMware has a tool that let's you migrate a VM from a hyper-v server to a ESXI one but my problem is that I want o remove Windows Server 2012 from a server and install ESXI on the same server, so I would like to back up my VM's before, but now just backup, backup in a ESXI format so I can use them on ESXI after installing it. Is there any way to do it?

Delete large snapshots

Hi everybody,

I would like to get some conformation or help, that I can delete two large snapshots that I made. Both are about 500 GB size. The problem is that this is mail server and I can't just play with it (power on, power off). The first shapshot was made before mail software version upgrade and the second snapshot was taken before adding second disk 100 GB to VM and then LVM resized(I've read that this is a big issue; disk resize and snapshots). I believe there is also performace issue because of snapshots and in later time also storage space problems will occur.

I would appreciate any help before things go wrong,

Luka

ESXi credentials become temporarily bad

Recently I have observed several instances of where ESXi  credentials have suddenly become bad, for no apparent reason.

This is true, from both a Web browser, and while attempting to use an ssh shell.

On some occasions, this appears to be temporary, and I can login with no intervention.

Other times, I had to login to the ESXi locally, by attaching a monitor and keyboard to the local machine.

With the local attachment, the password was good.

After I reboot the machine, then I can reach the ESXi machine through either browser or ssh command prompt as usual.:

Question: Am I describing a known problem, and if so if there a fix for it yet. If not, what information do I need to collect to open a problem.
