False Memory Alerts (guest standby memory ?)

$

Hi,

I have memory alerts in the vsphere web console for some windows 2012 server .

Those machines has 8 GB allocated in the host, the guest has 4GB active memory in use and 4GB of standby , the sum is 8GB so the alert.

But I don't want vsphere to alert me due to that standby memory, is there a way to avoid this behaviour?

thanks

Unhandled Exception loading OVA

I am attempting to deploy Vmware ESXi for my RSA authentication Manager virtual appliance;  I had it running on an older Esxi 5.0 server; However, that server had some hardware problems.  Dealing with RSA support our best course seemed to be take the backup of the RSA manager, and load it into a new ESXi server;  I did that, loaded ESXi 6.5 onto new hardware,

The problem is when trying to Load the RSA ova file on step 5 (Deployment options) - clicking the next button on this screen returns an "Unhandled Exception (1)"

Unfortunately, we hit an error that we weren't expecting.

Raw Device Mappings

Hello.

I have a question about Raw Device Mappings. I have never used this feature. What I would like to know is how the VM actually uses the Raw disk which gets assigned to it.

For example, if a RAW disk is assigned to a machine, will VmWare try to format that disk first in a format which VmWare understands?

In my case, I have an older windows server which uses some LUNs on a Storwize. I want to convert the system, which is physical, to a virtual server. The phisycal server has internal disks in raid 1. The internal disks are used for running the OS. However, due to the amount of data residing on the LUNs (on strowize), I was wondering if it is possible to assign the existing LUNs, used by the phicial machine, to the new virtual machine, as RAW disks. Will the existing data be kept on it or will it be deleted?

I think it will be deleted, because the RAW disk needs to be formated. But since I have never used it, it does not hurt to ask.

Thank you!

Consolidation failure

We have been trialing Dell Rapid-Recovery for ESXi backups, and occasionally experience consolidation failures.  Any advice on how to track down why, so that we can fix it?

This server is running ESXi 5.5 build 2068190.

This is the third time it has done this, each time with a different guest / vmdk.  I'm at a loss on how to proceed.  The only fix that has worked on the prior occasions was to reboot the ESXi host and do a manual consolidation.

The vSphere Client and command-line tools all give similar errors when attempting to consolidate without a reboot, stating that the they are unable to access the file since it is locked.  Even restarting the hostd daemon is not sufficient to allow consolidation to proceed -- nothing but a full host reboot.

Any ideas how to proceed?

Thanks in advance

vSphere 6.5 - VM becomes unmanageable after changing the CD device back to host device

I am dealing with a issue on my vSphere 6.5 server. After I use a Datastore ISO file and change the CD/DVD Drive 1 back to 'Host device, not connected at power on' the task Reconfig VM directly ends up with "Failed - The operation is not allowed in the current state". After this I can't manage the VM anymore through the webinterface, even the power on function is not working after this.

I have to unregister the VM and re-register it to power it on or edit the settings after this.

The problem is reproducible on my host and occurs with Windows and Linux guests. It happened on a fresh 6.5.0 installation and still is happening on ESXi-6.5.0-4564106

My host doesn't have a cdrom drive, maybe this has something to do with it.

VMware Essentials Kit - Can the CPU licenses be split across 6 single CPU physical servers?

I have a client that owns 6 locations (dental surgeries).

Each location has 1 single physical server with 1 CPU that will host a Windows Server and maybe 2 Windows Servers.

Can he use 1 Single VMware Essentials Kit and split the licenses to cover each of the 6 physical servers?

Thanks

Jumbo frame questions

$

Hi,

If I enable jumbo frames on a standard vSphere switch (as well as on a corresponding physical switch):

1. Do I need to change MTU settings on the VMotion interface too (since it's set to 1500 right now), or the vSphere switch settings will *overwrite* interface settings?

2. The same question is for VMs. Do I need to enable jumbo frames on all VMs that are connected to that switch?

The reason I'm asking is that we started observing occasional spikes of %DRPRX% on *some* VMs. The moment I set "Jumbo Packet" to 9000 on a VM's vmxnet3 interface, %DRPRX% drops to 0.

I also don't quite understand why only some VMs are affected? Is this an indication that affected VMs do require jumbo frames?

Say I have 10 VMs on a same host (different operating systems, but all with vmxnet3 and the default MTU 1500). All 10 are using vmnic1, but only two VMs report %DRPRX. If I adjust MTU on those two to 9000 %DRPRX disappears.

Many thanks.

Get Tags and Attributes from within the VM

$

Hi there.

I'm currently redesigning our OS setup and for our virtual environment which is based on VMware vSphere and vCenter (currently running 5.5 but in progress to being updated to 6.5).

With the new setup process I would like to leverage attributes and/or tags. When a new VM is being requested it will be created (automatically) with additional information in the attributes/tags like which Zone (LAN, DMZ, Zone 1 etc), Role, Service Class an others.

During the OS installation process I would need some of this information.

How would I get that Information? I know I can get it via Powershell, connecting to the vCenter and specifying the VM and get the attributes. But when I'm setting up the OS running a script within the VM I do not have the VM name in vCenter.

Can I get this info somehow via VMware Tools? Any other ideas?

Marc

Accessing VM Serial Port Connection Issue

$

I'm trying to setup a serial port connection to a VM to gain console access to it remotely.  But when I try and follow the documentation, I end up getting my telnet connection requests rejected (fast reject).

I've setup my VM (Cisco virtual WLC).  I added in a serial port with the following settings.

  • Use Network
  • Server (VM listens for connection)
  • Port URI= telnet://:12345
  • Yield CPU on poll is checked

I then went to the Configuration tab on the ESXi 6.0 server hosting the VM, selected Security Profile and then clicked on the Properties of the Firewall.  I then checked the "VM serial port connect over network" option and hit OK.

I powered on my VM and then attempt the telnet connection from my Mac, targeting the management IP of the ESXi server and the port called out in the serial port config.

telnet 192.168.1.112 12345

Trying 192.168.1.112...

telnet: connect to address 192.168.1.112: Connection refused

telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

So it rejects with a fast reject (not a time out).  That implies the ESXi server is actively rejecting the attempt.  I can telnet to the ESXi server on other ports that I know the ESXi server is listening to (like port 8000) and that works.  So the server seems to not be opening up the port that I call out in the Serial Port config.

Not sure if it matters, but this ESXi server is being managed by a vCenter Essentials server.  For giggles, I tried this on a different VM (different OS) and see the same result.  I also tried on another one of my ESXi servers and also saw the same thing there.  So it doesn't appear to be isolated to this one particular VM, VM type, or ESXi host of mine.

I'm at a loss for what to do next.  Any ideas?

I am receiving a timeout error whenever I try to edit Resource Allocation on my virtual machine. Error is below

Call "EnvironmentBrowser.QueryConfigOption" for object "1-envmgr" on ESXi " ESXi Name" failed.

I have tried from other servers and other operating system and other version of vsphere clients. There is only one esxi server here and we manage it as standalone.

A help will be appreciated.

Re-Add VMFS Datastore with two Extents after RAID Controller change

$

Hi,

what is the correct way to re-add a VMFS Datastore with two Extents after a defective RAID Controller had to be changed.

Situation:

- ESXi 5.5

- local RAID controller with two RAID Arrays configured

- a VMFS Datastore was created with one RAID Array and then expanded with the second RAID Array

- RAID Controller died in the ESXi Host

- RAID Controller was replaced with a similar controller

- RAID Controller shows both arrays as healthy

- rescan Datastores in ESXi doesn't mount a datastore

- the add HDD/LUN Wizard shows both RAID Arrays as possible Target with option to mount the datastore by keeping the signature, changing the signature or format the volume

- the original big Datastore is not shown in this wizard

- as far as I could find out both shown volumes are recognized as mirror LUN since they are accessed on a different path because of the RAID controller change

Question:

how to re-add the original VMFS Datastore containing both RAID Arrays and not loosing Data on the VMFS volume

VMware ESXi 5.5 U2 - TcpAckFrequency

Looks like there is a bug in VMware ESXi.

Exchange 2013 SP1 on win2k12 r2 on a physical server: no slow upload issue with Outlook.

Exchange 2013 SP1 on win2k12 r2 on VMware ESXi 5.5 U2: has slow upload issue with Outlook.

-tried E100E & VMXNET3 network adapters, doesn't fix the issue.

-only way to fix the slow upload issue is to modify the registry key TcpAckFrequency on the PC

How do I fix this in ESXi without modifying TcpAckFrequency in the registry on the PC?

Thanks

ESXi not showing local disks after patch

Hi,

We got some HP ProLiant Gen9 boxes running ESXi 6.0 Update 2.

Today I've applied ESXi-6.0.0-20170604001-standard patch and rebooted the server. There was no issues during the patching process at all.

But after ESXi got rebooted, the local disks are not going to be shown on vSphere client. Also an alert about non-persistent syslog are shown.

This is a totally odd situation, because apparently the RAID controller is detected during boot, but after ESXi is loaded, there are no local disks being shown, and we are unable to access it also via SSH, as it doesn't appears as a mounted device / vmfs volume.

After rolling back the update, we got local disks showing again.

I am thinking in reapply this update without installing the scsi-hpsa vib which I think that could be the problem as it was reported in an KB about causing controller detection issues, but it was on 6.0U1:

VMware ESXi 6.0 host fails to detect local disk after patching or applying Update 1 on HP Proliant Gen 9 servers (212053…

So, have someone any clue about this case?

Thank you in advance!

Reconfigure Windows CIB cluster to CAB cluster

$

Hi all,

is it technically possible (and viable) to in-place reconfigure a Server 2012R2, 2-node, Windows Failover Cluster running a 'cluster-in-a-box' configuration with shared vmdk's on a single ESXi host to the same 2-node, Windows Failover Cluster running a 'cluster-across-a-box' configuration on 2 separate ESXi hosts?

For example.... migrating the vmdk's to RDMs (using vmkfstools), moving one VM to 2nd host and re-configuring both VMs to the new RDMs in Physical mode (but that sounds too easy) ?

Has anyone experience of doing this and can give pointers, advice (don't do it ) ?

Thanks in advance...

Slow VM Windows 2012 with VM ESX Nested

Hi,

I have a new laptop MSI PE60-6QE i7-6700HQ 32Go RAM 1To SSD.

I installed VMware Workstation 12 Pro. Then I installed a VM ESXi 5.5 and a VM vCenter on VMware Workstation 12.
And from the VM vCenter, I wanted to do a VM Windows 12 or VM Windows 101 on VM ESXi.
The Windows VM in the ESXi VM is very very slow. It is impossible to install the operating system so the VM is very slow.

I have another pc and I do not have these problems slow.

It's really urgent because I have to make a presentation in a few days and I can not prepare my environment  Here are the actions I have already done: I checked the box : check the Expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS

But it's not successfull

Thanks

Server Appliance - VMWare Tools driving me crazy...

$
0
0

I have recently took over management of our companies VM Servers.

Everything was years out of date, so started with patching up to the latest 5.5 on the hosts and the Server Appliance.

I then upgraded tools on each of the VM's

And then patched all the VM's up to date.

It's been a steep learning curve.

Now i am literally stuck.

I have a Server Appliance running on SUSE 11.2, ideally this would be on a Windows VM from a management point of view but it's not so i'm trying to work with it.

I have upgraded the patches as mentioned but VM Tools is making me hate life.

From what i can make out it is running an OS specific RPM package (this is all new to me) I tried to run the tar.gz package but i get an error saying i need to uninstall the rpm package first in order to install again an easier to manage tar.gz package.

The article on VMware website doesn't work because it is saying could be called or similar to following this guide Uninstalling Open VMware Tools included with Linux distributions (1013096) | VMware KB

I do the rpm - qa | grep vm and the list i get back is longer than my arm, now i know i have version 10.0.0.5 by running vm-toolbox-cmd -v which may help narrow it down.

But i can not run the command rpm -e open-vm-tools-gui open-vm-tools vmware-guest-kmp-desktop From the article without knowing my specific file names.

So i thought ok, stick with the RPM and upgrade that, well that just looked even more complicated but i found this script Installing VMware Tools the easy way - OSP - SUSE Blog | SUSE Communities

Sounds perfect but it's not been updated since 2014 and it's failing even after updating the file paths.

I have seen articles saying to run rm -r /etc/VM-Tools or similar, didn't feel comfortable doing that so renamed the folder, still no joy. Guessing there are other components or needed a reboot but didn't feel taking that any further.

I also saw people saying to run zypper rm -y vmware-tools* which i assume searches and deletes everything vmware-tools related. Again i stopped at the point getting a little out of my comfort zone.

Ideal solution for myself would be to replace the server with a Windows VM but i'm not sure of the process and what that involves. I can follow a guide to setup new but to replace an existing is a different matter.

But short term i would like to update the rpm but preffered option is to remove the rpm and go with the tar.gz because when i do bite the bullet to upgrade from 5.5 or newer tools comes out i will have the same again.

Please help...

p.s. any references to commands may not be entirely accurate as i don't have them in front of me. just to give an idea of what i was running.
