Seemed to nuke my host by changing the PCI passthru in places I shouldn't have. I run ESXi 6.5 from a USB however since reinstalling the host (no hardware changes) I am face with the following error when trying to boot my primary VM (other VMs do start) - Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I've lost access to terabytes of data :S

iSCSI Mutlipath recovery time

Hello,

I have a problem with recovery time on link loose between esxi 6.5 (free registered version) and a Huawei SAN using iSCSI.

Our setup :

Servers with 2x10GE NIC connected to a dedicated switches stack, each NIC is linked to separates vswitches, one vmk per vswitch with a different IP per vmk.

The san has two link connected to the same stack, one ip per link.

Test : a vm running linux on the esxi, a shell running with : while [ 1 ];do date; date > /tmp/test; sync; sleep 1; done

First configuration, all the NICs are in the same VLAN. We have 4 paths listed per lun on the esxi but It seems that esxi only used one path to connect to the san. We could shutdown one of the two interfaces connected from esxi to the stack and still get the link working. Esxi is able to switch from one to the other interface it has without a break. When we shutdown one of the NIC of the SAN, if it's the path used by esxi, we got a 40 sec gap on the terminal before the vm start to run again. If it's the none used path, nothing happen.

We opened a case on Huawei support, they made us update the driver of the 10GE nic with driver qvaible on their site. add a rule to use Alua for Huawei nmp :

esxcli storage nmp satp rule add -V HUAWEI -M XSG1 -s VMW_SATP_ALUA -P VMW_PSP_RR -c tpgs_on

It didn't change a thing.

Then they made us changed the following parameters :

esxcli iscsi adapter param set --adapter=vmhba64 --key=NoopOutInterval --value=1

esxcli iscsi adapter param set --adapter=vmhba64 --key=NoopOutTimeout --value=10

esxcli iscsi adapter param set --adapter=vmhba64 --key=RecoveryTimeout --value=1

Now we have a 12 sec gap (1 + 10 + 1).

Second configuration, Huawei recommends to have a vlan per controller, so we reconfigured with two differents vlans, NIC1 is on VLAN1 for servers and SAN, NIC2 is on VLAN2. So now we only have 2 path for each LUN. We still have the 12 sec gap.

I thought that with multipath, it will use all the path at the same time, so the there will not be this Timeout.

The esx is able to know when one of his NIC is down and switch flowly. But when the SAN loose a link, the esx is unable to know that the path is down so we get the timeout.

Did we do something wrong ?

Guys

I just joined a company having multiple data-centers and thousands of clusters across globe, still going through KT about company's vmware infrastructure.

One of my cluster's host rebooted and all VMs went down as there's no HA/DRS is enabled on cluster. When I checked logs found below events that host installs some patches itslef, task initiated by com.vmware.vcHms

Looks like host downloaded some patches and after reboot it made firewall configuration change. I can't figure out what really happen coz there's no update manager or anything schedule. Anyone can guide me what happen by seeing below pic? Looks like one user started update service policy, is it due to that ?

Upgrade to ESXi 5.5 vs Linux VM with software raid for >2TB LUN

I have a Cisco UCS running ESXi 5.0.0 with 7 8TB drives in hardware raid 6, making a 22.74TB drive, and I would like to create a VM with a 20TB drive running Linux.

Would it be better to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (or later), or create the VM in ESXi 5.0 with a bunch of 2TB LUNs and software raid them within the VM?

(I don't manage the server, so I would need to get approval to get the upgrade done, so I just want to make sure I have the necessary information)

Problems with vSwitch (Lab 7 task 3 VMWARE ICM 6.0 official lab guide)

$

Hello everybody.

I am following the step by step guide of the official VMWare ICM 6.0.

I am completely stuck on "Lab 7: Using Standard Switches", task 3 "Assigning VM a new port group".

It has to be said that I am following the guide with the desktop client (not the web).

Task 2 tells me to create a new standard vswitch with a new Port group named "Produccion" (See "Screenshot_1.jpg" attached). Ok so far.

Task 3 tells me to assign that port group to the XP client on the first ESX. (See "Screenshot_2.jpg" attached).

Then I have to turn on the VM and do a ipconfig /release followed by an ipconfig /renew command. The IP that I get can be seen on "Screenshot_3.jpg" attached.

Then I have to ping my vCenter, with no success.

¿Why that IP configuration? ¿Why is there no gateway? ¿How can I configure the "Produccion" network so I can see my vCenter (192.168.1.50)?

¿why the IP ranges of vmnic0 and vmnic1 are such (See "Screenshot_4.jpg" and "Screenshot_5.jpg" attached)?

Thanks in advance!

hello all

i am quite confused about the amount of the products vmware offers.

short story: i develop a peace of hardware and would love to sell it. but for testing purpose and some mandatory scripting i need an exi, vsan, vdi products, automation. i need just a one place lizence from the products mentioned. a trial is not for discussion because i dont want to reinstall all 30 days the products. the pease of hardware contains more as one motherboard, therefore more as one processor and more as 32 gb ram. i need the enterprise verion (because of the faetures).

the question is very easy - where do i get official standalone lizence. for performance mneasuring it will run up to 50 vm (linux and windows)

i called some sells guys buy they dont sell it to me (because one lizence means more work as revenue)

thx for your input

Hi,

I need to add more hardware for 1 single esxi host. Running (5) VM-guests. Along with Veeam backup (VM). Need to make sure have good backup hostANDguest prior to upgrade hardware. What's the best way to perform this task.

Thank you

Bind Real-Time CPU process of multiCore vCPU linux OS to specific PCPU on Host

$

We have been working to get a real-time, latency sensitive communications application to run without errors in a virtual environment under ESXi 6.5.0 Hypervisor. Unfortunately to date we have had limited success in that endeavor. The communications systems consists of 2 main parts:

1) A linux (RHEL6.8) comms/audio process we wrote that runs on a dedicated CPU.  This is our RT CPU and runs at a 1,000 Hz frame rate and also talks to the Ethernet Interface (#2 below).

2) An Ethernet interface (Gigabit) to one or more audio distribution devices that runs on a closed LAN that is very time sensitive (i.e. SYNC’d clock network)

Our customer base has historically used dedicated hardware for each instance of the above.  That hardware is a quad core or better system that runs RHEL6.8 natively plus our software.  We do not have any audio issues in this configuration.

Our Host for Virtualization

We have a Supermicro SYS-7038A-I, Intel Xeon CPU E5-2660 v3 2.6 GHz, 10 CPU platform with 32 GB RAM and 2 Gigabit NICs.  The NIC for item #2 above is setup in Passthrough enabled mode for the best results and also based on some recommendations in your white-paper on latency sensitive applications.

VM Instance Definition

Note: For all the info that follows we are only running a single instance VM of our application.  Hence there is no interference from ‘other’ VMs on the same host.  Also for all of the below results Latency Sensitivity is set to HIGH and full CPU resources are reserved.

VM Working Configuration

We are able to successfully get our comms application to work in a VM instance, however it is only when Affinity is either ‘undefined’ or when it is set to all CPUs.  Which is ‘0-19’ in this case as hyper-threading is enabled.  When this is working you will see a chart like the one in:

ESXi_MONITOR_PCPU_CONSTANT.png

If you look at this chart you will see that the PCPU#7 is the CPU running our RealTime core process (RT CPU).  PCPU#10 is running our Non-Real-Time Core (NRT CPU) process.  However the important part here is that once I start our software (power on the server) the RT CPU stays on PCPU#10 FOREVER and it never moves.

VM Non-Working Configuration

This is the same as the working configuration except instead of ‘undefined’ or ‘0-19’ for the affinity we set affinity to ‘0-17’  Hence as its still the only VM running it still has the full access to those 18 CPUs (as opposed to 20), yet it moves around all the time as can be seen in the chart:

ESXi_MONITOR_PCPU_MOVING#.png

It is this movement of our RT CPU process from PCPU to PCPU that ‘may’ cause an issue in audio break-up.  I say ‘may’ because the act of the transition does not guarantee our system will break-up, however it has to date been the only cause for break-up.  Hence if I can lock our RT CPU to a PCPU I can get this all working!!!  I have tried other affinity settings like '0-3' or '10, 12, 14, 15’ or …. with the same basic results.

So I guess that gets me to my more specific question:

If I have a VM instance defined with say 2 vCPUs and one of those CPUs will be running a time-sensitve process is there a mechanism to lock that RT CPU to a PCPU for the duration of that VM instances uptime (i.e. Until powerdown)?

Thanks

Paul

PCI Passthrough of µPD720201 USB 3.0 Controller w/ ESXi 5.0u2

Hello!

I'm trying to "passthrough" a USB 3.0 Host Conroller PCIe Card with the NEC/Renesas µPD720201 4-Port Chip to a Windows Server 2003 guest with ESXi 5.0 update 2:

- The USB controller card shows as "Unknown USB Device" in the ESXi Passthrough configuration, but it can be selected and activated for passthrough

- The card will be recogniced from Windows 2003 Guest and the driver, version 30230, can be successfully installed, but the device does not work - a yellow exclamation mark with an error similar to "the device could not be started (code 10)" is shown in the device manager.

- A fresh installed Windows XP SP3 guest for testing will show the same behavior as the Windows 2003 guest.

- The card works fine unter a native Windows 2003 on the same hardware (for testing purposes, I have the old Windows 2003 installation, prior to the ESXi migration, on a small partition).

I found some posts, that the older controller chip, the NEC µPD720200, will work fine with passthrough (as other USB 3.0 controllers also) - but I was unable to find anything about the newer ones, the µPD720201 or µPD720202.

I also tried to get this running with the (current) ESXi 5.1, but this also failed with another, an essential, problem: the ESXi 5.1 seems to ignore a configured passthrough USB controller - the device will be unlisted after reboot. I found many posts in this forum about this issue and a post about an answer from a VMware technical support person, that this will not be supported anymore with ESXi 5.1.

So, I reverted back to ESXi 5.0u2, where this should basically work, but not in my case.

-> Does anyone have passthrough experience with the newer NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 Controllers and how to get this working?

Thanks.

Добрый день. Может кто сталкивался с такой проблемой . Имеется настроенный vcenter vmware. На него можно было подключаться как через VMware vSphere Client и через web client, но в один прекрасный момент доступ через web client пропал и выдаёт такую ошибку

503 Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [class Vmacore::Http::LocalServiceSpec:00000000021D5A50] _serverNamespace = /vsphere-client _isRedirect = false _port = 9090). Служба Vsphere web client сама по себе отключается через несколько секунд после её запуска.Может кто сталкивался. Буду рад любой помощи. Спасибо!!!!

NFS 4.1 on ESXi 6.5: unable to browse datastore

$

I mounted a NFS 4.1 share on ESXi 6.5a (single host, no vcenter).

This is the CLI command, but I can also mount it via web interface:

 esxcli storage nfs41 add -a AUTH_SYS -H 192.168.98.4 -v MyLinuxNFS -s /mnt/ds-esxi

My linux /etc/exports is

     /mnt/ds-esxi    192.168.98.0/27(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,anonuid=1002,anongid=1002)

After correctly mounting it, I can see it on the web client:

But I'm unable to browse MyLinuxFS, the "Datastore browser" stays in the following state forever:

Permission are correctly set, because I can write files and see the datastore via the CLI:

[root@vm2:~] echo "123test" > /vmfs/volumes/MyLinuxNFS/testfile.txt
[root@vm2:~] ls -la /vmfs/volumes/MyLinuxNFS/
total 24
drwxr-xr-x    4 root     root             5 Feb  5 19:32 .
drwxr-xr-x    1 root     root           512 Feb  5 19:32 ..
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root            10 Feb  4 17:10 testdir1
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root             4 Feb  4 22:26 testdir2
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root             8 Feb  5 19:32 testfile.txt

NFSv3 is working fine, but I would like to use NFSv4.1 because I'm experimenting to workaround bug KB2010953 in a bigger infrastructure.

I also tried with FreeBSD 11, it seems to support NFSv4.1, but I have the same problem described here: FreeBSD11 NFSv4.1 is not compatible with ESXi 6.5.

Any idea to make NFS 4.1 work on ESXi 6.5 ?

Consumed Memory

For a Virtual Machine, Consumed Memory is the physical memory 'touched' by  the VM.

During idle conditions, no hot ESXi and no memory pressure:

Does the consumed memory go down? this counter should always increase, is that correct?  will the VM ever release its consumed memory?

the only way to recover the consumed memory use by the VM is to reboot the VM and start fresh.

off course, when the Hosts is running hot on memory and starts using using Ballooning and swamping to release consumed memory. But my question above is related to idle conditions.

Third Party Ethernet to Serial driver keeps gets into unresponsive state

$

We use Perle's Trueport software (COM Re-director) to create virtual comports on a Windows Server 2012 R2. Starting in May after the Wannacry we received tickets in which the Trueport windows service stops responding and eventually gets closed by windows. We have only seen this issue occur on VMWare servers.

With the patches released in April that addressed security concerns, we'd like to know if any of these patches affected serial communication. We have seen this issue occur on 4 different servers, all in different environments, all running Windows Server 2012 R2 with VMWare with no issues prior.

Additionally, are there any measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of services becoming unresponsive due to system resources?

Howto backup an ESXi Server itself? Not configuration, not virtual machines!

$

I've got already good and tested solutions for

  • backing up the configuration of my two ESXi systems
  • backing up the virtual machines including the vSphere Appliance

But: Before updating or even upgrading the server itself (one is still running Version 5.1) I would really like to take a backup of the ESXi server itself!

Yes: I know, that a fresh installation is fast, but I don't have available the customised installation image.

--> Where do I find a procedure to take a full backup?

... and of course a procedure to restore?
