Esxi VM Memory Tweaking

$

I'm looking for information/pointers on what to look at when observing and tuning memory allocations.

Examples -

2008r2 VM, remote desktop services, users logged on, 2xVCPU, 12228MB ram configured, in task manager i see 12287MB Total RAM, 640MB free 8587MB available.

Would this indicate that i can reduce allocated ram by something like 7000MB ? I.e. I am over-allocated on this VM, assuming usage is running at the expected levels.

2008r2 VM, file and printer sharing services, 1xVCPU, 4096MB ram configured, in task manager i see 4095MB Total RAM, 349MB free 3165MB available.

Would this indicate that i can reduce allocated ram by something like 2000MB ?

2008r2 VM, SQL Server database, 1xVCPU, 6144MB ram configured, in task manager i see 6143MB Total RAM, 1977MB free 2161MB available.

This one seems tricky as SQL server appears to suck up all ram allocated when it gets busy so i have no idea how much i should allocate really.??

I'm just looking for best-practise approach really, I like to know i am extracting as much as possible from my server hardware and not crippling any VM's by having too little or too much allocated etc.

Thanks

ESXi datastore configuration

I have an application where I need to sustain 2+ GByte/sec throughput and im finding that the default datastore configuration is not supplying anywhere near that throughput.

Im looking for a way to create my datastore as a striped configuration on 4 luns from 2 different EMC arrays accross a set of 4x 16GB FC ports.

This will give me the required bandwidth, but im not finding how to setup the datastore as a stripe of luns.

Also, it would be very helpfull if I could resize the datastore, by adding/removing luns, but again im not finding any way to do this.

Can anyone point me to the instructions on how to stripe, add and remove luns from a datastore?

Thanks

rdm disks can't be remove from the vm when the vm has snapshot

1.create a vm and attach a rdm disk(-z mode)to it

2.take a snapshot.

3.after that, the rdm disk can't be delete due to the error "Failed - Invalid configuration for device '7'. Cannot remove virtual disk from the virtual machine because it or one of its parent disks is part of a snapshot of the virtual machine."

we know that the rdm disk(-z mode) can't be take snapshot, so in fact it was not include in the snapshot, and i think it can be remove from the vm any time and not affect the data.

Virtual machine cpu throttling after Vmware esxi upgrade

$

Hi all,

I have updated one of my host in my production infrastracture to the last Vmware patchs (esxi version 5.5.0 5230635)

After that, all VM that run on this host have serious problem of cpu throttling. If they are on load the cpu go on 100% of usage and the VM not responding

I have updated the vm tools but it's doesn't solve the issue; if I migrate the machine on another host (esxi version 5.5.0 3116895) the cpu usage decrease immediately.

Which could be the problem?

Thanks in advance for support,

Jack

Hello, I was checking in the VMware Compatibility Guide for Guest OS and I found that only include opensuse from 11.2 to 12.2 but no one of the newest openSUSE Leap 42.1 and 42.2 or the OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
These are in the future plans?

Incorrect frequency 2xXEON + HT enabled + Turbo enabled

Hi,

I have ESXI 6.5 running on 2x E5-2650v4 (base frequency 2.20 GHZ, turbo frequency 2.90 GHZ, 12 cores) with enabled Hypertrading and Turbo Boost.

ESXI reports capacity 52.7 GHz.

With HT enabled I have 48 cores in total.

But can't understand why I have 52.7 GHz only. If should be 2.90ghz * 48 cores = 139.20 Ghz.

If I run Linux with kernel 4+, using cpufreq util I can get 48 cores all running at 2.90 Ghz.

What am I missing ?

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 - Guest OS Windows Server 2012 R2 freezing

VMware ESXi Version 5.5.0

Build 1746018

HP ProLiant DL360e Gen8

48GB RAM

2x XEON Quadcore i7

1. VM Server2012 R2 as Domaincontroller 16 GB RAM

2. VM Server2012 R2 as TerminalServer 16 GB RAM

Hello, since may 2017 i have an issue with a guest vm on ESXi Version 5.5.0.

The guest stops randomly working and "freeze" within more or less 24 hours.

The eventlog doesn't note any error.

If the incident occures and i'm logged in via RDP the session isn't terminated.

ipconfig can't be executed and there is no reaction within the cmd process.

Surprisingly i can reach the Terminalserver via ping and get an echo.

The VM1 is still running without problems.

If the freeze  vsphere-client it's impossible to use the console and the status of the running vmware-tools changes to "not running".

What i've done, was to uninstall the KBs for .NET 4.x and reinstalled the vmware-tools - without any effect.

As Antivirus-Software is ESET on both VMs installed.

Does anyone have a hint, how to find the reason for this issue ?

Regards

Mike

Certificate errors when accessing vSphere web client on 6.5 (Hypervisor)

I am constantly getting the certificate warning in Chrome when trying to access my Home Lab's vSphere web client.  (same warning in IE)

I've tried saving off the certificate and importing it, but it doesn't actually appear to import.  I've spent a few days going through all the links on how to "fix" this and so far nothing has remedied it.

Any help appreciated.

ESXi not showing local disks after patch

$

Hi,

We got some HP ProLiant Gen9 boxes running ESXi 6.0 Update 2.

Today I've applied ESXi-6.0.0-20170604001-standard patch and rebooted the server. There was no issues during the patching process at all.

But after ESXi got rebooted, the local disks are not going to be shown on vSphere client. Also an alert about non-persistent syslog are shown.

This is a totally odd situation, because apparently the RAID controller is detected during boot, but after ESXi is loaded, there are no local disks being shown, and we are unable to access it also via SSH, as it doesn't appears as a mounted device / vmfs volume.

After rolling back the update, we got local disks showing again.

I am thinking in reapply this update without installing the scsi-hpsa vib which I think that could be the problem as it was reported in an KB about causing controller detection issues, but it was on 6.0U1:

VMware ESXi 6.0 host fails to detect local disk after patching or applying Update 1 on HP Proliant Gen 9 servers (212053…

So, have someone any clue about this case?

Thank you in advance!

SDRS migrating VM disk to same datastore

ESXi Host configuration backup fails

Recently upgraded to: DELLEMC-ESXi-6.0U3-5224934-A03 and  while trying to create a host configuration backup, I get the following result:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin>vicfg-cfgbackup.pl --server=10.2.1.201 --username=root -s c:\cfgbackup.tgz

Enter password:

Restore failed: A general system error occurred: Internal error

I have tried with the vCLI 6.0, vCLI 6.5. Why does it say "restore" failed????

Also, when I try to run the backup from the host, I get:

[root@esxi1:~] vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/sync_config

[root@esxi1:~] vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/backup_config

(vmodl.fault.SystemError) {

   faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

   reason = "Internal error",

msg = "Received SOAP response fault from [<cs p:1f2b6498, TCP:localhost:80>]: backupConfiguration

}

Any ideas? THX

Lost communication with ESX module

Hello,

I have the following problem.

We have a View farm with 5 servers. We have installed vShield for use with Symantec Endpoint Protection.

When I start vShield Manager and select one of the view servers I get an error Lost communication with ESX module.

I have searched for this error and it says that the problem is due to not synced time. The time one the ESX hosts and vShield manager are correct.

Both get there time from 0.europe.pool.ntp.org. What could be the problem of this?

The ESX server is running on 4.1.582267

The vShield manager is 5.0.2.791471 (Seen op the Updates tab in vShield Manager)

vShield Endpoint version is 5.0.1.638861

Were on vCenter Server 5.5 Update 2b. So to recap need to upgrade vnic to vmxnet3 for all win svr 2008 and 2012 vms, vm hardware to 10, and vmtools.Just need correct steps please.

Memory counters meaning in vCenter and capacity planning

$

0

Hi all,

Can you please confirm the below

1/ Can you confirm that “Virtual Machine Memory Usage” shown in the vCenter GUI is all the same here :

guest mem - % = memory usage ( summary page of VM ) = Memory (%) usage ( performance tab of VM ) = Host consumed % ( at VM level in performance tab / advanced ) =  active÷ VM memory granted ?

I refer to following

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002604

Capture.PNG

I’m less sure about host consumed %

2/ How is calculated the memory used as show in summary tab of a host

Capture.PNG

Is following correct

  • Memory used = memory consumed ÷ total machine memory amount
  • And consumed memory = total host memory - free host memory

  • So Is it correct that Memory used depends only on the sum of allocated memory given to each powered on VM by the admin + all overhead.

3/ For capacity planning, should you size the memory of VMs based on the average memory usage at VM level or based on memory usage at guest level..

Guest memory usage is always much higher ( example task manager in windows ), and virtual machine usage ridiculously small in vsphere.

I understand that looking at memory usage in the guest is more reliable for capacity planning.. ( even for HA reservations sizing )

Though VMware appears to say that memory sizing should be based on the memory usage at vsphere level :

A virtual machine's memory size must be slightly larger than the average guest memory usage.

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.0/com.vmware.vsphere.monitoring.doc/GUID-5E6E062F-7ECE-46C9-90B6-E7EF3517CBF9.html

4/ So should one size to a memory size slightly larger than the average memory usage as reported by guests ?

5/ Then if it is not for capacity planning or HA reservations planning, why it useful to show this kind of VM memory usage in the first place  in the GUI ? how useful for an administrator is it if they don’t reflect what VMs really use,
