Advice regarding VMFS volumes

Hi everyone,

First time poster here,

I have just setup my homelab to have a play with ESXi and I was just wondering if anyone could help me understand a couple of things regarding VMFS storage.

First off I have created a thin provisioned drive for a VM, i set it to 20gb but at the moment its showing that its used 23gb. Not to sure whats going on, do thin provisioned disks expand past what was originally set? I have an image below.

Second question, I have created 2 datastores on my single host. One is called Virtual Machines and the other is an iscsi lun from my Synology nas. However when i browse to the vmfs volumes on my host via ssh i see a few other things that I am not to sure of. Here is an example

Picture below as well

I thought they might have been snap shots or something but I dont think they are. When i browse to  599b310a-c2caa6e6-5cb4-001517685aee  for example and do an 'ls' it comes up with to folders 'packages' and 'var'. If i try and browse to some of the other directories above it just tells me i cant. What are these random directories?

Thanks all and sorry if I have been a bit vague, I'm new to all this.
