Datastore missing after upgrading to ESXi 6.5 U1

We were upgrading vSphere ESXi 5.5U2 to ESXi 6.5U1. After upgrade, the local datastore still existed but the datastores of two SAN storages were missing.

Then we tried to rollback and re-install 5.5U2, the datastores of SAN storage were still missing. In Storage > Devices, the SAN disks were missing. I have clicked 'Rescan' and nothing happened.

I checked the logs and found the following error message. I am not sure it is related.

How to replace default certificate for Secure Boot Virtual Machine?

$

Hi,

We just noticed that since vSphere 6.5, Secure Boot is supported.

From online document:

Enable or Disable UEFI Secure Boot for a Virtual Machine

It mentioned:

The virtual machine's default configuration includes one certificate for authenticating requests to modify the secure boot configuration, including the secure boot revocation list, from inside the virtual machine, which is a Microsoft KEK (Key Exchange Key) certificate.

In almost all cases, it is not necessary to replace the existing certificates. If you do want to replace the certificates, see the VMware Knowledge Base system.

Does anyone know what is the KB for replacing existing certificates?

Thanks!

double character typing

I have ESXI 6.5. I am experiencing the double character issue.

I have tried the following changes

Repeated characters when typing in Vmware remote console

VMware Knowledge Base

Repeated characters when typing in remote console (196)

Repeated characters when typing in your VMs remote console?

I have tried to edit the vmx file directly in the web console as well as download, editing and uploading the file. When I try to save the changes using the web the changes won't save.

The VM in question is a Windows 8 VM.

Is there any kind of other esxi/vsphere client that may allow me to do this? I am on a Mac so I was using an alternative to Notepad++ (I used Atom as well as Visual Studio Code).

Attached is screenshot of change made via Notepad++

Hello,

I have  two months searching information, but don't find the right answer.

I have ESXI now, but maybe this doesn't is the software need, and somebody can guide what is the solutions.

This is my needs.

Example:

Have 3 VM

1. api.example.com (Windows Server)

2. testing.example.com (Linux Server)

3. whm.example.com (cPanel Linux Server)

Have 1 IP Dedicated.

If open  api.example.com need the VM response to request domain or subdomain.

If open testing.example.com need show the page in the VM Linux.

Now have cPanel machine response all request, but can't route domains to diferent VM, I don't know if need more IP's or another software for work.

I'm trying to upgrade a Vcenter 5.5 appliance to 6.5.

I get the following error:

"Unable to retrieve the migration assistant extension on source vCenter Server. Make sure migration assistant is running on the VUM server."

Log file says:

2018-04-04T15:07:58.074Z - info: VUM upgrade switch enabled, query extensions and get the size info

2018-04-04T15:07:58.109Z - info: Got the extension: com.vmware.vcIntegrity

2018-04-04T15:07:58.233Z - info: MA extension not found

2018-04-04T15:07:58.234Z - error: There is no MA extension for VUM available on source VC.

I've been searching for this error and every article I've found says mount the iso on the vcenter source sever and run vmware-migration-assistant.exe. But my source vcenter server is the linux based appliance so I'm stuck on what I should do?

How to enable LBR virtualization for Intel CPUs on ESXi 6.5 ?

$

Hi,

A software i am writing needs to access the LBRs from a guest OS running over vSphere ESXi 6.5 on an Intel CPU (e.g. Skylake).

Is there any setting to virtualize the LBRs ?

If not can that be done by developing a virtual appliance to do so ?

Or is an experimental update or virtual appliance available from the VMWare labs to do so?

Thank you.

Run VM using only RAM-based datastore?

I have a number of ESXI hosts connected to my Jenkins server, and each host has a ton of RAM. In my Jenkins builds, I want to deploy and test VM images as fast as possible, so I'd like to know if it is possible to create the VM's disk images in a RAM-based datastore?  I have no need for any disk persistence, because as soon as the Jenkins build has completed, the VM will be torn down.

Esxi 6.5 error expanding iSCSI datastore

$

Hello

I'm having a problem expanding a datastore on Esxi 6.5 Update 1 build 7388607 that lives on a Synology NAS. After running through the wizard to expand the datastore, I get an error "Failed to expand VMFS datastore ServerDatastore - Cannot change the host configuration."
Here are the steps I took and what I've seen happen so far:
On the Synology, I expanded the iSCSI LUN into some unused disk space. (Originally expanded 1TB, for screenshots 1GB)

On Esxi, I rescanned the HBA

I went into the existing datastore and clicked Increase Capacity

I ran through the wizard, as seen below. I originally tried to add about 1TB to the datastore. That failed with the same errors as in the screenshots. Once I get through the wizard and see the error, I'm no longer able to go through the wizard without first increasing the size of the LUN on the Synology. That's why I'm trying to increase by only 1GB, it's the only way to get the wizard to run.

The vmkernel logs around the time I click finish say:

Has anyone seen something like this before? Any tips on what might fix it besides moving all the data off the LUN, deleting it and starting fresh?

Thanks!

macos in fusion and esxi

hello i am consolidating virtual machines from vmware workstation and fusion in a new esxi host.

i was able to follow these instructions (VMware Documentation for macOS 10.13 ) which specifying installation of osx 10.8 "mountain lion" first, but the installation bombs at about 30% and forces the vm to restart.

would i be better off:

[1] installing in esxi from osx 10.6 "snow leopard" DVD and then upgrading the VM from within esxi?

or [2] installing 10.8 "mountain lion" or 10.13 "high sierra" in fusion and then transferring the vmx/vmdk to esxi?

thank you

PXE EFI Boot not working

$
0
0

Hello,

(Update: I move this question to ESXi forum because I think it is more related to it...)

we are trying to boot a virtual machine by using PXE EFI boot and we are unable.

This is our setup:

- Hypervisor ESXi 5.5 U3g

- VM:

  - VM hardware profile 10

  - Windows 10 64-bit guest operative system

  - EFI boot mode

  - Network interfaces switched between E1000, E1000E and VMXNET3

We performed some captures and we have always the same problem: DHCP protocol exchange is OK but when the Virtual Machine should begin with the TFTP request, it crashes without ever sending the initial TFTP request package.

However, we have tested the same configuration for the virtualmachine in Player 12 (with VM Hardware profile 12 but the same values for the rest of configuration of the virtual machine) and the PXE EFI boot works sucessfully. It performs the DHCP exchanges and begins with the TFTP protocol for exchanging data files and it eventually boots.

So, we decided to test the Virtual Machine with a higher version of the hypervisor and also with higher versions of hardare profiles. We performed tests with ESXi 6.0 and 6.5, and with the virtual machine converted to hardware profile 11, 12 and 13 and we couldn't boot the virtual machine with PXE EFI never. We had always the same behaviour: the DHCP protocol exchange finished and the virtual machine crashes when it should send the first TFTP request package.

I would like to point out that "BIOS" PXE boot works greatly since the first time.

Do you know of any limitation to boot a virtual machine with PXE EFI? Any tip to get it?

Best regards,

Christian

Hi,

I had placed a NIC into SR-IOV mode and used the VF fine.  After testing this, I wanted to go back to disable SR-IOV and go back to normal mode.  But when I use "Configure SR-IOV" again in the hardware tab (ESXi 6.5 web) to set enable = no, I got the following message:

Failed to configure SR-IOV for device Intel(R) Ethernet Controller 10G X550T. Please see recent tasks for more details

Update Passthru Config

Key

haTask-ha-host-vim.host.PciPassthruSystem.updatePassthruConfig-119498961

Description

Update PCI passthrough device configuration

State

Am I missing something?  Any one know how to disable SR-IOV?  I tried to modify my esx.conf but no luck.

Thanks,

New to HP servers, are these log entries normal?

I'm setting up some new HP servers for the first time (normally use Dell) with the HP iso for ESXI 6.5. I'm checking the logs to make sure everything is ok and I'm seeing the following in the vmkernel.log every hour:

Promiscuous mode configuration support in SRIOV physical and virtual functions

$

Hi All,

Does ESXi 6.5 hypervisor support promiscuous mode on PF of Intel XL710 NICs? It is observed that, when two VFs belonging to same PF are assigned to two VMs and multicast traffic is sent from one VF to other, traffic doesn't go through. As per the latest references, looks like the host driver (In this case PF driver on ESXi host) need to support and allow this traffic.

Is there a way we can enable it in PF driver?

Hello to all,

I have an ESXi 5.5.0u3 with the HPE image installed on the HP Proliant DL380 Gen9.

ESXi showed me a warning on Smart Array P440ar about the firmware version: 3.56, a few days ago.
What does this warning mean, do I have to worry about the health of my raid and virtual machines?
Do you advise me to update the controller firmware to the latest firmware version which should be 5.04 (A)?
on the hp site the installation of the following drive storage is recommended, what do you recommend?
https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=1009087943&swItemId=MTX_a78b922d907748329e0f9054fd&swEnvOid=4184#tab2

Dell precision t3620 esxi

I am looking at buying something like this for my esxi lab

Dell Official Outlet Refurbished Laptops, Desktops, Servers & Monitors

Precision T3620

Tech Specs

Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5 Processor (Quad Core, 3.0GHz, 8M Cache, 80W)

Windows 10 Pro

256GB 2.5Inch SATA Class 20 Solid State Drive

32 GB DDR4 UDIMM Non-ECC 2400MHz (2x16GB)

16X Half Height DVD +/- RW

NVIDIA NVS 315 1GB (DMS59 - Dual DVI adapter)

Dell Outlet Precision T3620 Mini Tower

I cannot find anyone saying yes or not if this line of devices works or not. I have seen older dell precision devices mentioned but not any recently.

I know there is the poweredge towers but they are currently out of my price range. I am going to keep checking around but this seems like a decent deal that could work. All I need is ESXi and maybe 2-4 VMs

Thanks
