Esxi 6.5.0U1 and LSI SMIS Providers
Hi,
does anybody had success working with LSI megaraid SMIS Providers into Esxi 6.5.0U1?
I successfull installed the latest vib file downloaded from LSI web site (00.66.V0.02), but I cannot connect from any client.
In webinterface, in Monitor-> Storage area, I see the disks and the battery status, but there is also the following message on the top and in yellow background: The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is not running. Storage health data is reported by this daemon. Please see this KB article for information on enabling this service.
I found CIM server stopped at boot, if I manually start it, it runs, but I cannot access to LSI megaraid data from any client.
I created a firewall rule for ports 3071 and 5571 UDP and TCP, but from esxi shell, nc -z $ip_address 3000-5900 does not reports any open port.
Any hints to start trying to discovery the problem?
Thank you!
CIM Service does not startup automatically in ESXi 6.5
Hi together,
it seems that the CIM Service does not startup automatically in ESXi 6.5. For sure, I can start it through the GUI or cli with "/etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog start" but I use Auto Deploy.
I'm looking for a setting to tell my Hosts to startup the CIM Service when the system is booting. I need that Service for a Storage Plugin from Huawei named Ultrapath.
vSphere 6.5 U1 - Driver for Dell PERC H710 Mini
I just upgraded my Dell PowerEdge R320 to 6.5 U1. When I go into the Host - Monitor - Hardware - Storage, I get the message "The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is running, but no data has been reported. You may need to install a CIM provider for your storage adapter.".
The Dell PERC H710 mini appears to be compatible: VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Searchhttps://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=39513
I found an older post about needing the CIM driver because Dell doesn't provide one: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2013/07/01/monitoring-dell-poweredge-raid-controllers-in-vm…
Any help/advice on how I can get my storage data? I'm just connecting to the web GUI for the host, I don't have vCenter setup yet.
/bin/sfcbd crashed problem ESXi 6.5u1 with LSI CIM provider
I installed a new ESXi 6.5u1 on Friday 25.08 and until now the sdcbd service crashed three times.
I am using a LSI 9271-8i Raid Controller and installed the "lsiprovider cim 500.04.V0.66-0002" to manage my storage and raid through a vm.
When i suddenly cannot connect with the lsi management software anymore i have to restart the "sfcbd-watchdog" service and then sensors are ok and i can connect again.
Any ideas?
error: enumInstances No data received from server
Hi,
I'm getting the following error when running the below command:
[root@esxi:~] /usr/lib/vmware/vm-support/bin/swfw.sh
Software and Firmware versioning info from CIM Providers.
error: enumInstances No data received from server
[root@esxi:~] vmware -vl
VMware ESXi 6.5.0 build-5310538
VMware ESXi 6.5.0 GA
I was using the command to see the firmware versions of the server components. It was working fine, then I have updated the HP Smart Array P440ar firmware, rebooted the host (twice), and the same command which was working before is now giving me this error.
The local datastore is accessible, so I believe the firmware upgrade went well, but I'm not sure if it is related to this problem or not.
Googling for the error message did not return any relevant results.
Any hints what might be wrong?
Thanks a lot!
CIM programming guide in JAVA
Hi,
I want to develop a JAVA application which would monitor a server through CIM.
Basically, I would like the JAVA application to subscribe to the CIM broker (present on the server) so that in case of an event generation, it would send an indication to my JAVA application (a subscriber).
In this way, there would be no need to continuously poll the server from the JAVA application.
Now, I went through some posts on this community and in some of them I found that they are referring to some documentations based on JAVA though I didn't find it.
On Google, I found a pdf with some pseudo code based on python libraries though. I'm attaching it here.
But it would certainly help me if someone can point me to such guide in JAVA.
Thanks,
Error - "An application (/sbin/sfcbd) running on esxi host has crashed..."
Get alot of this error on my hosts, "An application (/sbin/sfcbd) running on esxi host has crashed...". Cant find any helpful kb, seems like sfcbd has something to do with hardware health monitoring. Any suggestion?

Cannot VMotion some VMs despite EVC being enabled
I have a cluster of three hosts of varying ages, running ESXi 5.1 update 2 with EVC set to Nehalem, to which I added a brand new host with ESXi 5.1 update 3 and Xeon E5-v4 CPUs. I VMotioned some VMs to the new host, and now most of them won't move back to any other host in the cluster with the following error message:
The virtual machine requires hardware features that are unsupported or disabled on the target host:
* Carryless multiply (PCLMULQDQ) (see KB 1034926)
* AES instructions (AES-NI) (see KB 1034926)
If possible, use a cluster with Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) enabled; see KB article 1003212.
CPUID details: incompatibility at level 0x1 register 'ecx'.
Host bits: 0000:0000:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0001
Required: x1xx:xx1x:11x1:1xx0:xxxx:xx1x:xxxx:xx11
The thing is, EVC is enabled on the cluster, and the message is not even consistent - some VMs are allowed to move back to the older hosts, while others aren't. I drained one of the older hosts and upgraded it to 5.1 update 3, same build (2323236) as the new host, but it doesn't help - some VMs can move back and forth, while others can't. Amusingly enough, if I right click a VM on the new host, click migrate, and pick the new host as the validation target, it shows me the same error - for the host that the VM is currently running on.
Is there a known bug around this or something? Is there a workaround?
Edit: never mind, I figured it out - this is the proper KB article: Migrating a virtual machine configured with Virtual Hardware version 7/8 to an ESXi host with newer CPU generation fails…
The few VMs I had configured with hardware version 9 migrate back and forth without issues; the ones with hardware version 7 or 8 can migrate to the new host but not back.

Is it possible to migrate back to a v4 cpu model cluster?
Is this how you can migrate VMs to a new server?

Hello fellow IT admins,
I am currently building server for my personal needs (Storing Files, Monthly backups of PC's, Nested Virtualization through Hyper-V, Streaming Media with Plex Media Server, Domain, Print Server etc.)
I will be using Win Server 2012 R2 VM for Storage, Streaming Media & Backups, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 for Nested Virtualization & Win Server 2008 R2 for Print Server & Domain.
This is my current planned configuration (Note ; I have very restricted budget right now and I need server, I will be upgrading RAM in future, I'll use 16 GB kit out of my PC) :
CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor (€314.99 @ Amazon Deutschland)

My question is will ESXi work with this config or do I have to go for AMD Ryzen ?
Bluescreen 0xc000021a Windows Server 2016 Installation
Hi,
I am trying to install Windows Server 2016 Standard with GUI to a ESXi 6.5 Host. After installing the VM trys to boot but get stuck every time with a bluescreen.
The Stopcode is 0xc000021a. I tried different configuration and images but the problem stays the same. Unfortunatly there is no further information provided with this BSOD. I already tried to repair the installtion via the install medium.
Configuration of the VM:
vCores: 4
Memory: 8 GB
HDD: 40GB, thin providioned, connected to SCSI (0:0)
SCSI-Controller: LSI Logic SAS
CD/DVD-Drive: connected to SATA (0:0)
Firmware: BIOS
Guest-OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (64 Bit)
I also tried first with UEFI as Firmware ... same problem.
The Host:
ESXi 6.5.0 U1
HPE Proliant ML150 Gen9
64GB Memory
Other VMs: with Debian, Ubuntu or FreeBSD, so this is the first Window Server VM
Does anybody know this problem. It dirves my crazy because I am trying to get this working for three days. Can I use the ordinary Image providey by Microsoft (de_windows_server_2016_updated_feb_2018_x64_dvd_11636745.iso)?
best regards

OVF deployment problems after upgrading to 6.5
I have a Win7 box with VMware Workstation 12.5 installed where I build all of the OVFs required by my team.
Recently I upgraded from vSphere 6 to 6.5 and that comes of course with the pain point made mandatory - the web client.
It's not enough that everything I need to do going from thick client to web client is now scattered all over the place like going from XP to Win10 without trying to miss a beat.
Something major that I need to do, deploying OVFs isn't even working anymore...
First things first, I'm in vcenter and deploy the OVF after maybe 30 minutes right at the end of the deployment received an error regarding a checksum on the manifest file. Well this is umm, your manifest file VMware created by the latest version of VMware Workstation. Hmm.
So I've traversed a few roads with this OVF stuff over the years, I checked into the virtual hardware, it's a new server 2016 VM I'm trying to deploy so I wanted to make sure I didn't have anything messed up with virtual hardware versions or virtual hardware types that have been problematic in prior versions. Nope, everything looks to be ok.
Second try at deploying -- during the browse to files I didn't select the manifest file, I left it out, the import appears to be successful, no checksum errors.
Attempt to boot up the VM and receive this message:
A disk read error occurred
Press control + alt + del to restart
Hmm, is this OVF corrupt? So I re-export it from Workstation and redeploy it... same error.
Do I have SAN issues? Redeployed to a different datastore on a different array... same error.
Is there like some incompatibility with the virtual SCSI controller on 6.5? I am running LSI Logic SAS, should be fine. I tried one or two others, ... same error.
Upgraded the virtual hardware, ... same error.
Upgraded the OVF tool VMware Workstation uses to the latest version available 4.2..re-export OVF, import, ... same error.
Eventually hit google and see a bunch of stuff in the 6.5 release notes for OVF, nothing however seems to match up exactly with what I'm seeing here.
Spoke with a couple of co-workers who claimed to have deployed the same OVFs that I built for them on standalone ESXi 6.5 (no vcenter) and claimed to have not experienced this issue!
Now I go to one of the standalone ESXi 6 servers that I have admin rights on in another dept. Deploy the same OVF, it deploys with no error and boots right up.
Hmm, so now I shut down the VM and export it from the stand alone ESXi server, import it to my 6.5 vSphere, same error, disk read error.
So that rules out Workstation but can anyone tell me what's going on with this?
I have wasted a good portion of several days on this issue and seem no further along to understanding it.
Failed to power on virtual machine . The attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state (Power off)
Hi All,
we created Windows Server 2016 VM on ESXi 6.5 U1. We can power on the VM and operate it. But when we shutdown the VM. We cannot power on it anymore. The message is "Failed to power on virtual machine <VM name>. The attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state (Power off)."
Do you have any idea? I found there is no new log added into VM log (i.e. vmware.log) . Is there any log I can check? How can I do to troubleshooting the issue?
Regard,
Osito
Cannot unmount datastore
Hi all,
We had an old server with loads of HDDs used as "NAS" and presenting 2x iSCSI volumes to ESXi hosts. These volumes were presented to few hosts, on 2x separate datacentres, under same vCentre.
This old server died and we did not bother to bring it back online.
When we logon to vSphere client the datastore is greyed out, but shows as "mounted" and "connected". Operational status is "dead or error".
If I try to unmount the datastore it gives me the error message: "Call "HostStorageSystem.UnmountVmfsVolume" for object "storageSystem-287108" on vCenter Server "vcentreXXX.mydomain.local" failed."
Does it mean that I just need to delete the datastore from the ESXi host?
From vmkwarning log the last entry to this datastore goes back to the day it died.
tail'ing vmkernel.log does not show anything related to this datastore.
comments/suggestions are appreciated.
Can anyone suggest a PCIE USB3 controller that is compatible with esxi?
I'm relatively new to esxi and this is for personal use, not any kind of production environment. Running esxi 6.5. The HCL is a bit hard to follow....is it only for chipsets instead of products?
I do not need/want passthrough, i'd like to be able to assign individual USB devices to individual guests instead of passing the entire controller through. So i'm looking for a controller that is natively supported in ESXI. Not able to find any cards that explicitly list support.
SMART SSD 'Media Wearout Indicator'
Can anyone advise on how I interpret the SMART SSD Wearout Indicator for this disk?
Is it 100% good (hence the Health Status is 'OK') or is it 100% worn out (if so, I think the Health Status should showing as at least a 'Warning'?)
./smartinfo script output from ESXi host /usr/lib/vmware/vm-support/bin/ |

Unsupported sata controllers, again
Hi guys, I know this is old question, but I cannot find solution.
I install ESXi 6.5 with integrated sata-xachi on ga-h55m-usb3 rev 2.0 with i3-560. In BIOS I set AHCI mode in all places that I find.
lspci -v show me, that driver for sata controller installed:
0000:00:1f.2 SATA controller Mass storage controller: Intel Corporation Ibex Peak 6 port SATA AHCI Controller [vmhba0]
Class 0106: 8086:3b22
But in web client I doesn't see my SATA controller. What I do wrong and how to fix it?
