ESXi 6.7 - Windows 10 Pro VM - poor disk performance

$

0

Setup

  • Closed lab (no internet access)
  • One Physical switch
  • 4 working ESXi VM Hosts (but only one powered on for this issue)
    2 with ESXi 6.5, 2 with ESXi 6.7.
  • One Windows 10 Pro PC - with installed VMWare Workstation 14 running vCenter VM and Content Library NAS (FreeNAS) VM
  • 2 other Windows 10 Pro PCs
  • All static IP addresses;   No Windows Servers (no active directory), DHCP, etc.
BIND for DNS service (needed by vCenter)
  • All VMWare products are currently evaluation licenses.

Note: newbie VMWare user...

Description:

Wanted to perform a disk test to compare between a physical PC and a VM, so I wrote an application to append the contents of one file (75 GB) to the end of an existing one (5 GB).

I ran the test app on a older and slower (as compared to the one for the ESXi Host) Windows 10 Pro physical PC (SATA IDE) - took 15 mins to complete.

The same test on a Windows 10 Pro VM running in an ESXi 6.7 Host (SATA AHCI) - took 37 minutes.

Basically, it's just this VM Host with the one VM running.

Why would there would be such a big difference in time?

Appreciate any help... Thank you.

Unable to revert to snapshots

Just applied ESXi 6.5 Update 2.  Now I am finding I am unable to revert to any previous snapshots(or new ones).  The vm is shutdown and was shutdown during the prior snapshot processes.  I checked the folder and there is no .lck file.  I am at a loss as to what file could be locked.  I see nothing for that folder when doing lsof either.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

The error is shown below:

   Revert To Current Snapshot

Failed - Unable to access file since it is locked

Error while uploading files for a new VM

Hello,

   I'm newbie with ESXI.

I bought one HP Proliant Microserver GEN8 and installed EXSI 6.5 and tried to install XPENOLOGY in it. Everything went well, but after that installation (that meanwhile i deleted) i had a problem with creation of new VMs.

Each time i try to create a new ovf VM it gives me the error "Failed to deploy VM: postNFCData failed: IO error". Please look at the PrtScr below.

Meanwhile, after reading a lot of forum posts i upgraded the web host gui to version 17 to see if it was the problem... but kept the same.

Can anybody give me some clues for what could be the problem?

   Thank you in advance,

VMWare ESXI - Remote Access via DynDNS - is it possible?

$

I've recently bought a computer, capable of running VM ESXI.

I'd like to access the server remotely via my home broadband, which is a standard dynamically assigned connection.

I've been using a DynDNS service to access services from home, this works perfectly well.

Is it possible to access ESXI's web interface remotely through DynDNS (or a similar service) and more importantly, is it possible to route traffic from the outside world to my internal VM's running on the computer?

The bigger picture is to have multiple servers running various tasks (some clones of each other for redundancy), all accessible from the outside world whilst using a dynamic IP address.

Any help on the situation would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

VM ware shutting down at 5% battery level with recent windows updates

VMware used to suspend(Hybernate) if battery level reaches 5% in Mac. After recent windows update instead of suspend, Windows is getting shutdown. I have verified the advanced power settings and batter critical action is "Hybernate" only.

Can someone help how to fix this?

cim-diagnostic.sh - INFO: sfcbd is administratively disabled

Hello All,

I spent some time yesterday fighting with cim-diagnostic.sh and couldn't get it to work.  I was trying to track down some detailed info on the server memory, but cim-diagnostic.sh would only respond with:

[root@localhost:/tmp] cim-diagnostic.sh

INFO: sfcbd is administratively disabled

I couldn't find any config file or other location within the Web UI were I could "administratively enable" sfcbd so that the script would run.

The steps in this KB, as well as some other websites, were followed to make sure sfcbd was enabled (and it was):

How to disable the CIM agent on the ESX/ESXi host (1025757) | VMware KB

After finally taking a look at the script itself, it looks like it's searching for the string "enabled: false" in /etc/sfcb/sfcb.cfg.  This is located within the first few lines of the script.  However, after the grep command in the script, the condition on the if statement seems to be incorrect.

I made a copy of cim-diagnostic.sh in /tmp and changed the if statement to:

if [ "${DISABLED}" != "" ]; then

After that, the edited copy of the script was able to run successfully.

This was an HP ESXi host running the custom HP image: HPE-ESXi-6.5.0-OS-Release-iso-650.9.6.0.28

If I was missing something about running cim-diagnostic.sh or if there was a different way to address this, please let me know.

Thanks!

ESXI 6.7 Crashes during file transfer over network to share drive

My esxi host is crashing during a file transfer over the network to an openmediavault share. I am on ESXI 6.7 and running the latest version of openmediavault as a nas/share drive. Has anyone experienced this, not specifically with OMV but crashes during file transfers?

ESXi 6.5 Slow vms, High "average response time"

$

I am running esxi 6.5 with the latest patches and vmware tools 10.1.5

I am having very inconsistent performance issues with both of my hosts. Basically the windows 2016/windows 10 guests are sluggish at times. nothing will load and the os is basically unresponsive when interacting with the gui. The issue seems to be stemming from disk performance but I am not 100% certain that this is the cause, it may be a side affect.

What I have noticed is that some vms show a average response time for the disk of about 2000ms. Yet if i check the performance monitor at a host level the disk and datastores are all showing sub 1ms response time. I am not able to explain the inconsistencies there.

I have a local ssd datastore on each host as well as a rather fast nvme iscsi san that is connected via 100gb mellanox connectx4 cards. I see the issue with both hosts and both datastores. The issue seems to be worse now with the most recent patches and vmware tools drivers. I am using vmxnet3 network cards and paravirtual scsi controllers on all vms.

I have run disk benchmarks on the vms and the resutls vary. I have already seen it where i run a disk benchmark on a guest, get horrible results, vmotion it to the other host, and benchmarks to the san are fine, and then i vmotion the guest back to the original host and the results are fine the second time I run it.

esxi 6.5 vmnic with "no networks"

3x Fujitsu Primergy RX2510 M2

running ESXi 6.5 u1 (Fujitsu VMvisor-Installer-6.5-5969303-v411-1) with Intel I350 4port NICs

All drivers are as vmware/Fujitsu ISO standard.

HP ProCurve Switch 5406zl  with cluster uplinks connected to the same 24 port Gig-T ZL module.

vswitch.pngvmnics.png

all 4 uplinks on each port group are patched into the same switch, have the same switch port configs (untagged vlan xxx)

I have an intermittent issue with 4 vmnic4 showing "no networks". The vmnic in question is one port on a 4 port Intel I350 P4 card.

Once a vmnic shows this state, its stuck that way until I either down and up the vmnic, or reboot the host.

A week later a second host did exactly the same with a different port on the same make/model of 4-port card.

about 10 days later the 3rd host also did the same with a different port again.

If i vmotion the VM to another host its fine.

If i drop the problem vmnic out of the port group, the vms are fine on the remaining uplinks.

the problem NIC on each server is one port in a 4 port card, with all 3 other links functioning perfectly before and after.

I have been all over this including wiresharking the problem port from a VM.  The "no networks" uplink still shows some traffic from the LAN, however a lot of ARPs are going unanswered etc. so Im not convinced this is a flakey port.  However Ive also replaced the 4 port NIC in one server, only to have the issue reappear a week later.

esxcli network nic stats get -n VMNIC4 reveal the following:

Receive FIFO errors 57039176

Receive missed errors: 57039176

No other errors are shown.

Any pointers on this would be a huge help!

Cheers

Oracle RAC on VM extended Cluster

Hi

We have a running RAC cluster on a VM which is based on Raw Disk mapping and shared across data centers.   This is a stretched cluster across two data center.  Recently we had one site the SAN storage , VM and Network was down. The services fail over happend successfully but we saw that the ACFS diskgroup and ADVM went into a unknown state.

We tried to reboot the server but then realized that VM was unable to start the VM since it was looking for disks mapped from the Data center 1 SAN. All the disk were shown as Dead.

Please help to identify what could be the problem

Thanks & regards

SNMPD instability on ESXi 6.7

$

Hello everyone,

Since I upgraded to vCenter server 6.7 and ESXi 6.7 I seem to have SNMPd instability issues. LibreNMS is polling my hypervisors for monitoring, and SNMPd crashes at least once a day on all ESXi hosts. Does anyone else see this behaviour and what can I do to stabilize them? I took the alerting off the monitoring because it is giving us at least 25 false positives a day now.

esxtop in batch mode does not use config file

$

I am trying to collect disk statistics using esxtop (resxtop would be fine too), but it appears that it ignores my saved configuration.  If I run it normally, it does read the config file, but not in batch mode.  The resulting file is too large for me to import into Excel.  Anyone else experiencing this?

I suppose I could attempt some post-processing with awk or Perl, but what I really would like is for the program to behave as describe in the documentation and to use the saved config file when in batch mode, just as it does in interactive mode.

Here is my current .esxtop50rc, saved in my home directory on the vMA:

vMA:~> cat .esxtop50rc

ABcDEFghij

aBcDefgHijKLmnOpq

ABCdEfGhijkl

ABcdeFGhIjklmnop

aBCDEFGH

AbcDEFGHIJKLmno

ABCDeF

ABCDe

9u

I have also activated ssh and gone on the ESXi host and run esxtop there, but I get the same behavior.

A couple of basic questions from someone new

$

My boss has asked me to look into virtualizing our development machines. Our dev machines need to run on dual monitors because our software runs on dual screens for the users so we need to make sure it all looks good together. Right now we have 2 monitors on a physical machine and VNC to them (when working remotely) so that we still get both monitors. Would I be able to configure vSphere (I'm assuming that's what I'd want) so that each VM has a resolution that would be equivalent to dual monitors?
