ESXi 6.7 Storage Vmotion Problems with Mellanox

$

Hi,

im wondering whats the difference between my hosts and drivers. Since i have massive speed problems when using storage vmotion and im trying to find the best driver/software version but i cant figure out the source of the problem.

3 HP DL380 G9 with Mellanox Technologies MT27700 Family [ConnectX-4]

3 Netapps 2650/2240/6240

Remove old net-mlx4 when using 5 ? Do i need both ?

Is the VMWare 6.7 known issue the problem ?: It does not seem to help so far applying the command.

The Mellanox ConnectX-4/ConnectX-5 native ESXi driver might exhibit performance degradation when its Default Queue Receive Side Scaling (DRSS) feature is turned on

Receive Side Scaling (RSS) technology distributes incoming network traffic across several hardware-based receive queues, allowing inbound traffic to be processed by multiple CPUs. In Default Queue Receive Side Scaling (DRSS) mode, the entire device is in RSS mode. The driver presents a single logical queue to OS and is backed by several hardware queues.

The native nmlx5_core driver for the Mellanox ConnectX-4 and ConnectX-5 adapter cards enables the DRSS functionality by default. While DRSS helps to improve performance for many workloads, it could lead to possible performance degradation with certain multi-VM and multi-vCPU workloads.

Workaround: If significant performance degradation is observed, you can disable the DRSS functionality.

  1. Run the esxcli system module parameters set -m nmlx5_core -p DRSS=0 RSS=0 command.
  2. Reboot the host.

IOMMU fault type 5

Hi,

I've encountered an issue on ESXi 6.5 U1 where my vm would just power off randomly. The error i'm getting on the event log is VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vmx) PCI passthru device 0000:86:02.0 caused an IOMMU fault type 5 at address 0x10d24a000). After that, any vm with that pcie device would not power on. Has anyone encountered this before? or does anyone know what IOMMU fault type 5 relates to?

--------------

I have a technical question.

We want to migrate a XenServer 5.6 to vMWare ESXi 6.5.

It‘s possibe to convert directly. Or is it  necessary to do a intermediate step ??

I thank you in advance.

ESXi 6.7 M5000 GPU Pass-through to VM - no device detected

I am having an issue with getting a VM to load and display a graphics package.
The VM is running RHEL 7 VM that is using PCI Pass-through on ESXi 6.7

I created a Linux RHEL x64 VM.
I was able to activate the M5000 GPU for the VM via PCI.

When the VM boots, a modified XORG RHEL OS is loaded via a PXE menu.
The OS loads and I reboot,,,

I can see the OS load as there are several messages being displayed on the VM screen.
It continues and then it stops at the message:
“Started OpenSSH server daemon”

Looking at the Xorg.log, I see messages such as:

NVIDIA GLX Module 390.25 ....
Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs

Using VT number 1

No device detected

Fatal Server Error

No screens found

I am not sure what this specialized OS runs, but it loaded on physical server and works.

Any ideas on what i need to add or modify to get the OS to load and run the graphics to the VM screen?

thanks

Unable to Connect to MKS: Connection Terminated by server - ESX 5.5 VMs console

Hi,

I am facing a weird issue here on ESxi 5.5 host and its VMs. The VMs were running fine also the ESXI host was reachable. But suddenly i lost the connectivity and when I checked from vsphere client, all the VMs were in hung state, when I tried to open the consoles for it, I got below message "

"Unable to Connect to MKS: Connection Terminated by server "

After some research on google, I found that ESx host reboot will fix it and/or   hp-ams service stop will fix it. Since I was not able to get into the server remotely, I had to reboot the host manually. After reboot, the VMs are running fine and everything normal now, but when I tried to search for hp-ams service on host. I didnt find that service or I did not even find the hphelper log file anywhere on the host.

Can someone please let me know what could be the other reason if hp-ams is not there and how can I stop this crash occurring again ?

I am facing an issue with hyper-threading on ESX host 5.5. The ESX host (Dell R710) was hard rebooted using power button. (Powered off and then powered on)

After reboot, I see the hyperthreading details as below. It was active before but now its showing inactive and not supported. Its showing enabled though.

   Hyperthreading Active: false

   Hyperthreading Supported: false

   Hyperthreading Enabled: true

What can be done to make it active?

Thanks in advance.

how to install Mellanox connectx-4 in ESXi 6.7

$

Hi

I cannot get ESXi 6.7 to install Mellanox ConnectX-4 in ESXi 6.7

I the UI on the ESXi I can see the Mellanox card under manage->hardware.

But it will not show up under NIC or under HBA, not sure where to find it.

If I from the CLI run the command

esxcli hardware pci list

I can also see the ESXi have found the controller correctly.

But as you can see Module ID and Module Name has not been set.

   Module ID: -1

   Module Name: None

I use the build in driver in ESXi 6.7 as it should support this controller and I have upgraded it to newest firmware so it fits with HCL

Any way to fix this?

Weird locker folder problem results in Fatal error: 33 (inconsistent data) when trying to remediate host

Hi All

I am having trouble remediating a host (a node in a vSAN cluster) running on 6.0.0, 5572656 (ESXi 6.0 Update 3a) with some updates but upon reboot ESXI fails to load with:

Error Loading /s.v00

Fatal error: 33 (inconsistent data)

If I do a cold reboot, the host successfully boots back into the hypervisor but the updates have not been applied.

I also got an error earlier today on this host:

The host returns esxupdate error code:15 (This seemed to sort itselft out)

I have a ticket with VMWare but it’s been open over a week and they haven’t been particularly helpful so far.

If I run: cd /vmfs/volumes

find / -name locker

The command takes ages and then eventually returns the image below

Capture.PNG

Navigating through the directories - ls /locker/packages/6.0.0/floppies

It seems to loop back to the locker folder contents. It looks like some weird symbolic link issue but I really don’t know how to fix it or if im on the right lines.

The host and VMS otherwise run perfectly and I don’t have any other issues. I have run df -h and there is plenty of disk space. Any help would be massively appreciated!

Shrinking Linux VM Created by Converter - P2V

$

0

Hello All,

I know this has been asked many times. But, every link/discussion I find has a different answer, and I'm not sure which one is the right one. And a lot of them depend on the VM being thin-provisioned, which this is not...

I recently moved to a Windows 10 machine from a OpenSuSE machine. Since Linux is my go to, I decided to convert my old laptop to a VM using the VMWare Standalone Converter and a Trail Version of ESXi 6. Now, I have the VM converted to a Virtual Machine within my ESXi trail VM. The end-game is to export the VM to Workstation Player.

The physical machine that I converted had 300 GB for '/' partition, which I don't need all that space anymore. I was able to get the used partition down to about 40 GB on the VM, and I was hoping to get the partition shrunk down to about, maybe 60 GB (*from currently 300 GB).

I read you can use the Standalone Converter to do v2v to shrink the partition, however in the converter I don't seem to have that option to shrink the disk, from what I can tell.

Here is what the disk looks like inside the VM:

*The partition numbers seem strange because the P2V was a dual-boot windows/linux laptop and I only wanted the Linux partitions...

     sda1 = /boot

     sda6 = /

     sda5 = swap

Could someone help me out for what I need to do to shrink down the ' / ' partition, i.e. sda6?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

VMWare ESXi host lost connection after setting NIC to 1000Mbps

$

I was setting up some new networking setting on my main home server with ESXi 6.5, and I noticed the speed wasn't what I would expect, and found the ethernet speeds where set to 100mbps, so I set it to 1000mbps and since then, it doesn't seem to be able to connect anymore. I looked through the router and such and it should support 1000mbps, but it doesn't even assign any of the nics any DCHP IPs on the network, so there is no communication. The ILO3 adapter works fine, but I can't  access the VMware UI with no web connection, is there anyway to get the UI on the host machine, or tell it to only use 100mbps via commands from the machine?

Do vậy việc thiết kế lên ý tưởng, bố cục màu sắc ấn tượng sáng tạo là rất quan trọng.

Quy cách in tờ rơi hiện nay

- Công nghệ in nhanh (in laser màu): lấy được sản phẩm trong vòng 1 – 2 tiếng. Tuy nhiên chất lượng không được đẹp bằng in offset và chi phí in tương đối cao. Loại hình in này phù hợp nếu bạn in số lượng ít.

ESXi 5.x on an Intel J1900 board (Q1900-ITX Asrock) issue

$

Hello everyone!

I have been trying to install ESXi 5.1u1 & 5.1u2 & 5.5u1 on the following configuration to no success so far:

Asrock Q1900-ITX mobo (Intel J1900 Baytrail SoC, BIOS 1.20 with VT-x support)

8GB RAM Kingston

120GB OCZ Vector 150 (tried to connect on both SATA2.0 and SATA3.0)

Intel CT1000 NIC

Bootable 4GB FAT32 USB stick with an extracted installation (using Unetbootin) (tried to connect on both USB2.0 and USB3.0)

ESXi 5.1uX results in/stops at a black window/screen after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

ESXi 5.5u1 starts loading the modules and stops/freezes right after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

I have tried in the bios:

- Boot USB legacy

- Boot USB UEFI

- Disabled PXE (both NICs)

- Video memory to a minimum (64MB)

- Disabled onboard audio & NIC

- I have tried (unofficial?) inserting drivers into the installation ISO (NIC/microcode/xahci) from v-front.de.

I know that most/all of my hardware is not on the HCL, which doesn't mean it can't work, of course (like my old system).

All to no luck so far. However I successfully installed Proxmox hypervisor on this system. Others successfully installed NAS4Free (FreeBSD) or Ubuntu/Debian.

But I want ESXi 5.x for my home server, like I have on my old Intel D525 with a max of 4GB and OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (ESXi 5.1u2).

Maybe someone has some tips or advice to install ESXi 5.x on my new system?

Hi,

Quite new to Vmware, played around with workstation in the past.

Have run up ESXi 5.5 on this G8 previously and it has worked fine. However now I try to install ESXi 6.7 it fails to find the internal network interfaces. Solved it by adding a single Intel card, and have since tried installing the drivers I managed to find in a VIB file (VMW-ESX-6.5.0-ntg3-4.1.2.0-5562451) this was allegedly as far as I could tell the right driver. Installed via the shell and followed the instruction within the zip file. Seemed to install fine, however the internal interfaces are still not seen.

Any pointers please for a newbie? And please don't tell me it is not a compatible server! Beginning to work that out for myself. But slightly confused why 5.5 worked happily? And hoping that someone has a work around. Only want this as a test lab machine.

Best wishes Paul
