ESXi 6.5 Slow vms, High "average response time"

$

I am running esxi 6.5 with the latest patches and vmware tools 10.1.5

I am having very inconsistent performance issues with both of my hosts. Basically the windows 2016/windows 10 guests are sluggish at times. nothing will load and the os is basically unresponsive when interacting with the gui. The issue seems to be stemming from disk performance but I am not 100% certain that this is the cause, it may be a side affect.

What I have noticed is that some vms show a average response time for the disk of about 2000ms. Yet if i check the performance monitor at a host level the disk and datastores are all showing sub 1ms response time. I am not able to explain the inconsistencies there.

I have a local ssd datastore on each host as well as a rather fast nvme iscsi san that is connected via 100gb mellanox connectx4 cards. I see the issue with both hosts and both datastores. The issue seems to be worse now with the most recent patches and vmware tools drivers. I am using vmxnet3 network cards and paravirtual scsi controllers on all vms.

I have run disk benchmarks on the vms and the resutls vary. I have already seen it where i run a disk benchmark on a guest, get horrible results, vmotion it to the other host, and benchmarks to the san are fine, and then i vmotion the guest back to the original host and the results are fine the second time I run it.

here is an example of a bad test, the reads are terrible:

I have my ESXi 6.5 server up for about 3 months without issue. Starting a few days ago an error occurs on login. If I choose "reload" I'm returned to logon splash seems to be in a loop. If I use the browser refresh ( found this out by accident) instead of the reload button it makes to the navigation page. Do I need to rebuild my server?

ESXi 6.0U3 disk performance extremely slow

Hi there

I have recently installed and setup a new installation of ESXi 6.0U3 on a PowerEdge R740 and am having issues with the disks speeds being appallingly slow.

I have made a datastore on the host and have tried it with both a RAID 5 configuration and non-RAID as well but both are very slow.  When doing an SCP transfer to the disk is usually sits around 20-50 K/s and trying to run a VM to install an OS loading the Windows 10 ISO takes over an hour.

The host is using a Lewisburg SATA AHCI Controller.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Hi experts,

I am getting strange behavior for ESXI6.5 (installed as test at my home clone server). Like i have installed 2 SSD, one is Intel M.2 and another is transcend SATA III SSD. from both SSD i have created datastore. But i am getting different speed on the 2 SSD like on intel i am getting full speed but on transcend i am getting only 16mbps speed. tried to search google, but didnt got any solution. my ESXI is installed on intel M.2 SSD.

esxi_ssd.jpg

Pls find the speed diff (2.02 vs 22.77 MB/s) t10.ATA is transcend and NVMe is Intel M.2

Pls suggest what to do.

hi All

I installed ESXi on a Asrock X99 Extreme6 mainboard. Everything works fine except the Atheros network interface.

I allready tried the Atheros AR8161 VIB Driver and

  • net-atl1: Attansic/Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet driver
  • net-atl1e: Driver for Atheros(R) AR8121/AR8113/AR8114/AR8131/AR8132/AR8152 PCI-E Ethernet NICs

Does anyone has a VIB driver file for the atheros ar8171 interface?

Thanks,

Stefan

vSphere Replication Appliance 8.1.0.6060 Build 8744176

We have host1 in datacenter1, and host2 in datacenter2.

When I do a vMotion from host1 to host2, the vMotion works fine.

But when i do a replication from host1 to host2, i get error:

No host can be used to access datastore path '[datastore2]'.

Why replication does not work?

is it correct that - In order to configure vcenter HA should i keep different vcenter hostname (OS) names  from their inventory names?

in guides i find - HA handles itself all the cloning process. So i think it does not matter that if i keep hostname and inventory names same of vcenter.

should i keep my vcenter hostname different from inventory names in vcenter inventory or it does not matter -

any idea and any guide you can point me.

VMware Hypervisor failed to boot after update C220M4 to latest BIOS

With the recent update of our vCenter, there were a lot of storage errors. I spoke to VMware support and they mention the physical hypervisor does not have the latest BIOS.
Our VM boots from a USB thumbdrive.

After updating to the latest BIOS 3.0(4i), I encounter the error below.

How should I troubleshoot on this ?

ESXi 5.5 Dell VOMA gives errors with continuous stream for VMFS partition which looks fine

We have ESXi version: Esxi5.5.0, 8934887 on Dell PE R630 server

With the commands below we have the error report.

Looks like VOMA does not able to check the partition.

Anybody could you please help to resolve the problem?

Full output log is attached here.

ESXi 6.7 kernel panic during Heap_Free in dlmalloc

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I couldn't find a bug tracker for ESXi.

The host has been running ESXi 6.0 and now 6.7 without issue for a couple years. After reboot, it's all back to normal; so, I don't think it's a hardware problem. I wasn't doing anything in particular when this happened. I.e., no easy repro.

Can I use a PCI Passthrough to a USB controller if I run ESXi from USB?

Hi.

I installed a ESXi 6.5 server and moved my VM's from old server (5.5) to the new one.

The new server runs from a USB stick and my datastores is on a SSD drive.

In one VM i use som USB-adapters, so i connect the usb-adapters I use to the VM.

But that is not without problems.

firsh I head this problem: https://labs.vmware.com/flings/esxi-embedded-host-client/bugs/116

Then I head this problem: (unable to dismount USB devices) https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2068645

But what is I buy a new PCI-Express USB-conroller card and then use PCI-Passthrough  to it, will that work, og will I have the same problems?
