How to clone a VM on a ESXI 6.5 server?

$

I tried to copy the vmdk and vmx file from a original vm folder to a new vm folder on the web interface. But the size of vmdk file is only 561B. If I boot the VM I get the error "couldn't find disk file".

I also tried use the command "vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/datastore/BaseVM/BaseVM.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/datastore/NewVM/newvm.vmdk", but I get a flat.vmdk in the newVM folder. And the VM could't boot, too.

I want to know what is the right way to clone a VM on a ESXI 6.5 server. Thanks.

SNMPv3 Configuration on ESXi 5.5/HP NNMi

Hey All,

I know there is a lot of discussion on the topic of SNMP on the Community Board and out on the internet, but I haven't yet been able to find anything that's helped. I'm trying to get SNMPv3 working with auth/priv on my ESXi 5.5 hosts. I can get it working just fine with v2, but as soon as I introduce the auth and priv components, it shows up in NNMi as "No SNMP". Today, I tried v3 with no auth and priv and still no-go. We've opened tickets with both VMware and HP and they just point their finger at each other.

I've followed the process below, which is from the VMware Blog site:

There are 8 steps (not all are applicable):

  1. Set the engine Id (need to convert string to hexidecimal string)
  2. Set the authentication protocol which either beSHA1,MD5ornone
  3. Set the privacy protocol which can beAES128ornone
  4. Generate the authentication and privacy hash from the user supplied passwords if either protocols were enabled. You can either provide a file that has the password or use the -r flag which specifies the raw input password
  5. Configure an SNMP user and associating the authentication and privacy hash from the previous step
  6. Set the SNMP target which includes the port and user
  7. Enable SNMP service on the ESXi host
  8. Validate SNMP configuration by performing a test operation

esxcli system snmp set –engineid 766d77617265

esxcli system snmp set –authentication SHA1

esxcli system snmp set –privacy AES128

esxcli system snmp hash -r -A secret1234 -X secret5678

esxcli system snmp set –users william/f9f7311379046ebcb5d134439ee5b7754da8a90f/d300f16eec59fb3b7ada7844ff764cbf4641fe5f/priv (I used the hash values for the secrets I used)

esxcli system snmp set –v3targets pod23-esx-01a.pml.local@161/william/priv/trap

esxcli system snmp set –enable true

esxcli system snmp test

We can get the snmpwalk to work, but there is something with the credentials that it doesn't seem to like. In my username, I'm using all uppercase letters with one underscore and for the password I'm using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters and special characters. In my research on the internet, I've found that Solarwinds users are reporting that they also cannot get SNMPv3 to work with 5.5. Has anyone here gotten v3, using auth and priv, to work on ESXi 5.5? Am I missing something in my configuration?

Thanks,

Jeff

I have a Dell PowerEdge R620

Vsphere states that "You are running Dell Customized VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 (VMKernel Release Build 799733)"

However, it also states that my Vmware ESXI is Version:6.0.0 Update 3 (Build 5572656)

I tried to update to the latest VMWare 6.5 version, but I receive errors during the install.

Question 1; How can I be running both a Dell ESXi and a VMWare ESXi?

Question 2: What do I need to do to get the latest 6.5 version installed?

The disk extend operation failed: There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation

On datastore (it's SAN) we have more free space (1 Tb free)

If the environment is having two sites (Site1 and site2) which will be having SRM, so in this scenario will we have any benefit ? Or It will just add additional complexity.

Hi there,

for some reason ESXi 6.7 does not like some of the responses or non responses of my Intel board. Every other sensor works flawless (Temperature / PSU / FAN / etc.) even the other Voltage Sensors.

Here it is on the Intel BMC

Can I only turn of these 4 sensors?

Thanks a lot for your help

Resource pools on ESXi 6.5

Upgraded a stand-alone 6.0 ESXi host to 6.5.0b this morning.  Put it into maintenance mode using the thick client for the last time... makes me sad.

Anyway upgrade went smoothly except for the fact that I no longer see any of the 15-20 resource pools we had defined on here.  We use them historically not so much to throttle resources but to organize VMs by user.  If we give someone a local account and define it on the resource group then those were the only VMs they had visibility to when logging in.

On our vcenter we just use folders for that purpose.

So have resource pools been removed from standalone ESXi as of version 6.5?

ESXi 6.7.0 on MacPro 6,1 - Display Issue

$

Background:

I am installing ESXi 6.7.0 on several MacPro 6,1 machines.

I am able to complete the installation and network configuration at the main screen.  However, I have to jump back and forth between several of these machines to configure each one, or go back and reconfigure something.

I am using a crash cart (Keyboard, 4:3 Monitor) with a VGA to mini-DVI adapter in one of the Thunderbolt 2 ports to work with these.  I am still procuring an HDMI to DVI connector to test whether the HDMI port has the same issue.

Issue:

When I disconnect video from a device, and connect to another, or reconnect to the same device, I see a black screen.  No output from device and monitor goes to sleep.

No input or mouse movement can cause the display to wake-up.

I have tried this with different displays and all experience the same issue.

I get video if I reboot the device, either by hard reboot or by restarting the machine from muscle-memory (keyboard input is still plug-and-play, it seems).

Is this a known issue with ESXi 6.7 on MacPro 6,1 or is this just an issue with using the Thunderbolt port?

Virtual Disk Space Error

I have a client who has VMWare ESXi 4.1.0. The other day their internet gateway virtual machine (linux based) and their Windows Server was powered off. When I attempted to power on I received a Virtual Machine Message that there is no more space for virtual disk (server name.vmdk).

The overall data store is 136.5 gig with 13.5 gig free

Virtual Machine 1 has 82.01 gig provisioned using 79 gig (domain controller, which I know is getting full)

Virtual Machine 2 (was powered off) is 81 gig provisioned, using 13.33 GB

Virtual Machine 3 (was powered off) is 52.02 gig provisioned, using 26.54 GB

The server seems to be fine for a few days then shuts off virtual machine 2 and 3. Not sure what's going on.

Obviously I'm new to issues with VMWare so any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Datastore not mounting after RAID rebuild from failed drive

$

VMWare ESXi 5.5.0 - I have an HP Server with a RAID 5 configuration that after replacing a (1) drive and re initializing the RAID, my datastore is now not mounting. I have two missing VM's. In the storage configuration I should have 2 datastores. Under datastores only one is showing. Under devices I I show two devices. naa.600508b1001c698c8f8380587e5cc212 is what I am after. If I rescan, it does not mount. If I go to add storage, choose LUN, and regardless if I choose VMFS-5 or VMFS-3 I get prompted with "this configuration will delete the current disk layout. All file systems and data will be permanently lost."

Running partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600508b1001c698c8f8380587e5cc212

I get

gpt

145875 255 63 2343487580

1 2048 2343481874 AA31E02A400F11DB9590000C2911D1B8 vmfs 0

Running partedUtil getUsableSectors /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600508b1001c698c8f8380587e5cc212

I get

34 2343487546

Running esxcli storage vmfs snapshot list bring be back to the command prompt so I'm guessing its not viewing it as a snapshot

I have a hard time believing that the raid wiped my data with the rebiuld of just one drive in a raid 5.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi.

Im having trouble adding my HP MSA2000fc storage in VMware.

The LUN has been mapped to LUN101 and i VMware the HBA finds the LUN (Because im troubleshooting im only using 1 cable directly from HBA to MSA controller)

2.jpg

As you can see, the LUN is found.

Then i try and add it as VMFS-5 and get this error

1.jpg

Afterwards i check the patition and it is what it shows:

~ # partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

unknown

I've also tried mklabel with gpt and get this error.

~ # partedUtil mklabel /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

gpt

msdos works, but im still not able to mount it in VMware

On the MSA i've done a "restore defaults factory" and afterwards configured it as basic as possible.

LUN 101 read/write. (There is not much to chance in the webinterface).

I've done a 4 disk RAID5 and 12 disk RAID6, just to be sure the disks were wiped.

Any suggestions?

Regards Michael.

ovf/ova export missing from vsphere 6.5 web client

Does vSphere 6.5 web client support Internet Explorer 9?

I have a single server with local storage running vSphere 6.0 with the latest patches. This is a very basic setup with no SAN, vCenter Server, or other features utilized. I manage this host from a Windows Server 2008 (original) server. It has two guest OSes on different subnets which are segmented from the management computer. I am considering upgrading to vSphere 6.5, which is supported on that physical server, however, that will necessitate moving from the Windows vSphere client to the vSphere web client. While Microsoft is still releasing patches for Internet Explorer 9, some websites don't render correctly on that web browser. I do have an older version of Google Chrome on that server as well, however, it is a bit behind as Google no longer supports that OS for Chrome. I tried doing some web searches for Internet Explorer 9 compatibility with the vSphere 6.5 web client but got nowhere.

Can anyone say from experience if Internet Explorer 9 or an older version of Google Chrome will work with the vSphere 6.5 web client? If not, I may leave well enough alone and remain on vSphere 6.0.

vsphere 6.7 LSI raid card, can't get drive status

$

Hi!

I have this server setup at home:

SuperMicro X10SLL-F

Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3

32GB 3CC 1600

LSI 8708EM2

2x Velociraptor 10k 300gb RAID 1

4x WD Red 2TB Raid 5

I was running Vsphere 6.0 since a long time, and I decided to go over 6.7. Installation worked fine, I have access to everything, all is working... Except 2 things:

1. I can't get my LSI 8708EM2 (detected as a 1078) to show drive status

2. Can't get my Storage Manager to access disk info or rebuild raid.

When I was on vSphere 6.0, I was able to see my drive status (and veeam one could alert me), and with my WIndows VM, I had LSI MSM and I was able to configure the raid card.

So what I did:

Install SAS driver I was using in version 6 --> not working

Installed the SMIS I had  --> not working

Installed lastest SMIS  --> not working

Disabled the Firewall --> not working

I have no idea what else I can do. I know it's an old card, but I got it for cheap. Any idea how can I get this fixed?

Thanks
