Error in mounting a RDM disk

$

Environment: Esxi 6.5U2 on HP microserver gen8 and a ubuntu 18.04 vm.

I used vmkfstools to creat a vmdk link to a harddisk

vmkfstools -z "/vmfs/devices/disks/{diskid-xxxxxxxxx}" "/vmfs/volumes/{mydatastore}/hdd.vmdk"

then I add this vmdk to the ubuntu vm in ESXi Web UI and it can be seen like "/dev/sdb" in ubuntu shell

when I mount /dev/sdb1 ~/data, an error occured like "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error"

How can I use this disk?

Logs to remote syslog server

So, Googling this suggested I go to Configuration, Advanced Settings, Syslog, global, Syslog.global.logHost and enter the log server.  That didn't work.  I went to restart the syslog service and got:

A specified parameter was not correct: id

Call “HostServiceSystem.UpdatePolicy” for object “serviceSystem” on ESXi “<hostname>” failed.

vSwitch and Portgroup Security settings

It is possible to edit the security settings for "Promiscuous Mode", "MAC address changes" and "Forged Transmits" in two places:

On the vSwitch and on each individual portgroup on a vSwitch.

Can the settings on a portgroup override the vSwitch settings?

So for example if the vSwitch has "Promiscuous Mode : Reject", what happens if I have a portgroup on the same vSwitch with "Promiscuous Mode : Accept"? Would a VM on that portgroup be able to receive all packets on the VLAN, or only those originating within the vSwitch?

In short, what is the hierarchical relationship between the security settings on a vSwitch and its portgroups?

XFS and RHEL7 guest os

Hi All,

Just trying to find some help in troubleshooting an issue we are having.

When we have a client do an rsync to a XFS partition on a RHEL 7 guest , it's causing the guest vm to hang and the only way to recover is to reboot the host.

the host is VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 5969303, we need to patch soon anyway to bring it up to the latest security levels.

The guest OS is up to date as well.  We don't have this issue with RHEL6 guest, just RHEL7.

We have done tools, vm hardware upgrades etc OS tuning, looked into the java setting for how large the  the underlying datastore can be, max amount of storage presented etc.

I'll go over the logs again, but for the moment I'm going to swap it to ext4 and see how that goes.

VMWARE ESXI HOST LOGIN FAILED 6.7 (PERMISSION DENIED)

Host reboot and IP addresses are lost

New HPE DL380 Gen10 servers running the HPE customized ESXi 6.7 software

Management is setup on standard switch, DVswitch used for VM, iSCSI, and vMotion traffic

VMkernel ports are all setup for iSCSI and vMotion with iSCSI binding showing all storage volumes

Reboot a host and the IP address information for the iSCSI and vMotion is gone! The IP address for the management network stays just fine

Not sure if the problem lies with the setup of these new servers (BIOS or NIC settings) or with the HPE customized version of ESXi

Any ideas?

This is my first installation of a VM-Ware environment and I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Installed  esxi Host 6.5

installed  esxi  6.5 vcenter server Appliance   (although installation was not smooth (stuck at 80% and other - however manage to get it installed.))

installed Vphere web Client 6.5

I am know stuck at adding a host to VSHERE web client.

Created DataCenter

Added host

enter root user and password

repacel the SHA1 Key

List VM-Machines in Host

assign license

disable lock-down mode

select folder

finish

and all i get is  "A general system error occurred: Timed out waiting for vpxa to start"

I have preformed the following

service mgmt-vmware restart

service vmware-vpxa restart

AND

followed this thread

Adding host to cluster: "Timed waiting for vpxa to start"   where the time is changed.

Are wildcard certs allowed on VCSA?

We want to replace the certificate on our VCSA version 6.7 with a wildcard cert we purchased from GoDaddy last year. The only cert we want to replace is the one that generates the annoying browser warning. Can we use a wildcard cert? I found a few articles on how to replace this cert but they never mention if a wildcard cert is OK

i also tried to boot with ESXi 6.0 update 2 so its showing error that "disk will be repartitioned" I am not sure that after doing that the data will be as intact or it will be loss

Running Oracle VirtualBox VM inside VMWare ESXI VM

$

I have an embedded VM (Oracle Virtual Box with Windows 10 64 Bit) on ESXI 6.7 VM (Windows 10 64 Bit). The embedded VM has few software installed in it. I am facing performance issue running embedded VM inside ESXI VM. I noticed that the embedded VM operations like accessing the applications inside it, working on them is 100-150% slower than the same embedded VM when deployed directly on a host/physical machine (OS installed on h/w) without ESXI.

I have tried the following to optimize the performance for the embedded VM.

1. Taken h/w benchmark of the host/physical machine and the ESXI VM. It was observed that benchmark reading (CPU, RAM & Hard Disk) is 15-20% less in ESXI VM compared to physical machine.

2. As recommended, I have kept 10-20% of total RAM not allocated to guest VM. Multiple 4 vCPU assigned to ESXI VM and 2vCPU to embedded VM.

3. VTx enabled and expose h/w virtualization enabled for embedded VM.

4. Used SSD in thick provision since there are lot of disk operation by the software in embedded VM.

5. Looked at parameters like load average, %READY, memory over commitment using esxtop command and they look to be normal.

6. Installed latest drivers for ESXI VM and embedded VM as well.

Please let me know other areas I need to look at.

Thanks,

Bidyut

vSphere ESXi 6.5.0 Hardware Sensors

$

Hello Everyone,

I have a Q170 based motherboard and have successfully loaded ESXi 6.5.0. However, ESXi does not display any Hardware Sensor Data and reports "No Sensor Data Available".

Does ESXi require BMC or IMPI to obtain hardware database? Does it not get at least basic sensor information from the CPU sensors, etc.?

Thanks

Query on memoryStatusInfo

$

Hi

ESXI 5.5.0 2068190 on IBM x3650 M3, 48GB RAM, Dual x5650 - Only Three VMs: 2012R2, Zabbix Appliance, Centos

This is just a query as the system is working fine (for now).

I have recently started using VEEAM ONE (Free) to monitor this ESXI Server and am getting an alarm alert for Host Hardware Status : Sensor "Memory" equal Alert.

This seems to correspond to the following VMware (so I dont think its a VEEAM ONE issue) MOB: content -> rootFolder -> childEntity -> hostFolder -> childEntity -> host -> runtime -> healthSystemRuntime -> hardwareStatusInfo -> memoryStatusInfo

This is showing: Key = "Red", label = "Red", summary = "The physical element is failing"

My question is what does this mean? What checks is it making for this value?

I have shut the machine down and ran extensive hardware tests using the built in IBM System Diagnostics and it found nothing (that it reported).  I ran its dedicated memory check and that was good.  The light path is not showing any error codes.

The VMs are working, and I cannot see this error in the VSphere Client - I may not be looking in the right place, the "Health Status" screen shows all Green Ticks and Normal status.  I really only became aware of the issue due to VEEAM ONE.

I did try to search the documentation but this page: https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.wssdk.apiref.doc%2Fvim.host.HardwareStatusInfo.html was the best I could find and it just says "Status of the physical memory" which I don't understand.

I have another IBM machine (M2) which VEEAM is connected to and MOB is green for this one.

Thanks is advance for any help or pointers

Pete

power failure: VM not booting and stuck at blank screen with "-" prompt

WE have 2 cisco BE6000M M4 ie cisco 220 M4 server for unified communication server (CUCM,CUC,IMP servers).

Power failure happened in the datacenter. both server went down.  after powering ON we found three VMs didnt boot up. console screen shows blank screen with "-" blank prompt. its esxi 6.5. There is no other errors or warning or log showing from ESXi 6.5 side. there is no VCenter.

What could be the reason? I tried to boot from recovery disk by setting boot order CD drive as the first order. but whenever the VM restarts boot order changed back to HDD. why this is happening?

UP and down arrow also didnt work while setting boot order. but Plus/Minus button worked. it was in internet explorer 11.5.

Hello Experts,

Can you please let us know what is the max number of RSS queues supported per VF with Intel XL710 10G/40G NIC with ESX 6.0/6.5/6.7

You can assume that the VM is Linux VM running the latest i40evf driver.

Expand datastore on diffrent raid configuration

Hello Community,

We are trying to expand a VMFS datastore on an ESXI 6. the configuration is the following:

1st Datastore : 6 Disk of 2TB with Raid 5 configuration

Just Added 2 Disk of 2TB with raid 0/raid 1

My question to the community is the following:

If I expand the 1st datastore to use  the availiable disk space while the raid configuration is diffrent. Would this make a performance/consistancy issue ?

Thanks for the help.

ESXi - Network setup/segmentation - possible to do the following?

$

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but I am researching and looking more into how to do more robust networking on my ESXi home server.

Small lab server that I setup for now, work related stuff.

(3) NIC's in the server, only one being used.

I want to keep those VM's on their own isolated network, off of my home network (stuff like ROKU, TV, Acces Points etc.).

However, I would like my home PC to be able to access those VM's on that isolated network. Just keep them separate.

I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on how to set this up.

I appreciate the help.

ESXi v6.7 can't attach Serial port to VM

$

I have a new v6.7 ESXi server running on a Dell 990.

The computer has one Serial port.

How do I test to see if ESXi can use it? I do see it under /dev/char/serial/uart0.

I can add it to the VM (powered-off), via ESXi web interface, as a "Use physical serial port", then I select "/dev/char/serial/uart0".

That saves ok.

When powering the VM on, I get "Cannot connect the virtual device serial0 because no corresponding device is available on the host. Do you want to try to connect this virtual device every time you power on the virtual machine?"

Any ideas?

ESXi 6.7 M5000 GPU Pass-through to VM - no device detected

$

I am having an issue with getting a VM to load and display a graphics package.

The VM is running RHEL 7 VM that is using PCI Pass-through on ESXi 6.7

I created a Linux RHEL x64 VM.

I was able to activate the M5000 GPU for the VM via PCI.

When the VM boots, a modified XORG RHEL OS is loaded via a PXE menu.

The OS loads and I reboot,,

I can see the OS load as there are several messages being displayed on the VM screen.

It continues and then it stops at the message:

“Started OpenSSH server daemon”

Looking at the Xorg.log, I see messages such as:

NVIDIA GLX Module 390.25 ....

Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so

NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs

Using VT number 1

No device detecte

Fatal Server Error

No screens found

I am not sure what this specialized OS runs, but it loaded on physical server and works.

Any ideas on what i need to add or modify to get the OS to load and run the graphics to the VM screen?

thanks
