datastores not consumed

$

Hi,

Seeing a bit of a strange one - we have 3PAR LUNs presented to a 6.5 HPE blade cluster via FC and each datastore is presented too all hosts.

They all work fine however on a host reboot some of the datastores are shown as 'Not Consumed' as their operational state in Configure > Storage > Storage Devices. This hasn't had an effect on operations thus far as most of them show up connected after reboot and DRS must only migrate workloads back to that are housed on connected storage..

We only noticed it after bringing hosts back into use and a storage re-scan brings any datastores back instantly.

Has anyone seen 'Not consumed' before or have any pointers?

I will try re-create the behaviour in dev today.

Thank you

Threadripper ESXi 6.7 GPU and USB passthrough, experience progress and problems

$

Hello all-- thought I'd pass through (pun intended!) my experience so far getting up a multiheaded ESXi box on an AMD Threadripper platform.

Hardware:

ASRock Professional Gaming X399 motherboard

AMD Threadripper 1950x

64GB DDR4 RAM

1TB nvme m.2 drive

NVidia 1080 FE

Software:

ESXi 6.7

Windows 10 64 bit client

Steps that have worked so far:

I can get a vm with GPU passthrough working. In order to do this, I had to:

Upgrade the BIOS to the beta version (AGESA update)-- otherwise VM won't power up.

The mystical hypervisor.cpuid in the vm configuration, to avoid error 43 in the NVIDIA drivers in windows.

Edit passthru.map (I'm using d3d0, not bridge; others have used link).(On my former build not doing this yields complete host hang when restarting a VM.)

Turned on all IOMMU options, ACP , SVM in BIOS.

VM must use BIOS, otherwise hangs at Windows loading if USB passthrough is enabled.

The board has 3 USB controllers that I can see.  Each appears associated with two other devices, a "nonessential device" and a platform security processor in addition to the controller itself.

I can't get the aquantia 10GB ethernet to pass through, not that I've tried very hard.  It seems to get stuck at "enabled but needs to reboot" despite infinite reboots.

Current problem:

I can pass through a USB controller and it works fine.  If I then shut down or reboot the VM, it hangs on windows logo when starting again.  From a cold boot, no problems.

Things that haven't worked:

Changing PCIE switch mode in BIOS  to Gen 2 instead of Auto.

Idea: Perhaps the USB controllers on this board  (AMD Family 17H USB 3.0 controller?) also need to use d3d0 rebooting? Seems strange, but the bug is reminiscent of what the consumer NVIDIA boards do when not switched to bridge mode.

Hope my experience has been helpful to others and any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks "LT"

ESXi PSOD and random freezes

Hi folks,

I am new with ESXi. And my english is far from good but here is the problem.

I have 3 hosts running ESXi and which i thought has best hardware, consistently freezes from time to time. One once even gone to PSOD.

His hardware are supermicro SYS-6018R-WTR (BIOS version 2.0b) 2 x Xeon E5-2620v4, 64Gb ddr4 ram, LSI 9260-4i RAID with battery, 4 server toshiba disks.

Look at the picture below with error message:

esxi_error.png

Is it something related to processor?

Thank god we are on holidays until 9th of January but please can somebody enlighten me what can be done to make this host stable?

Thank you!

6.7U1 vs 6.5U2 passthrough regression

$

Hello.

I'm hopping someone has some clue why this is happening.

Using esxi 6.5u2, passthrough GPU (NVIDIA 2080 TI) works perfectly. On 6.7U1 it works until I reboot the Windows VM. After rebooting I get error code 43 and the only working fix is to reboot the host. The GPU passtrhough only works on the first VM boot. If I reboot the VM it stops working with error code 43.

Downgrading to esxi 6.5U2 fixes the issue.

Any suggestions ?

Windows 2016 failover cluster on ESXi 6.0

$

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a new windows 2016 failover cluster but when I validate my cluster i get some errors/warnings.

ESXi 6.0u2

RDMs (3par 7000)

Windows 2016 VMs

Error/Warning message :

List Disks To Be Validated

Physical disk {704dbde3-bc68-4c46-a49a-d428c2ef58cd} does not have the inquiry data (SCSI page 83h VPD descriptor) that is required by failover clustering.

Really don't understand what this means... right now I have only exported the Quorom disk to my VMs.

Except for the error message everything seems to be fine..

Any advise?  Is this something I can ignore and continue to export RDMs to my newly created failover cluster?

Cheers

Tyler

Cannot deploy vmmark 3.1 OVA to vCenter 6.7 / ESXi 6.5

I downloaded from VMware VMmark 3.1.

I've tried deploying the OVA using vCenter (flash /chrome) kept getting this error:

The "Deploy OVF template" operation failed for the entity with the following error message. Unable to deploy template.

Tried connecting directly to ESXi host (6.5).

And error at final page in wizard was complaining about a missing disk.

Considering the OVA is directly from VMware I assume the 'missing disk' is a red herring.

Thanks

Can't launch vmrc from Firefox - Fedora 27

$

About a month ago I instaled the Vmware Remote Console on my Linux laptop running Fedora 27 x64. Everything worked fine up until a few days ago after a >500MB update to Fedora and Firefox Quantum. Now, when I try to launch the console from any VM's page in Firefox, I get a message:

The address wasn’t understood

Firefox doesn’t know how to open this address, because one of the following protocols (vmrc) isn’t associated with any program or is not allowed in this context.

    You might need to install other software to open this address.

I've tried uninstallig and reinstalling vmrc a couple of times, and vmrc is never properly registered within Firefox. How can I fix this? I'm using version 10.0.2 of the Linux console.

Pseudo counters 0x10001 and 0x10002 always the same?

$

I have the following program to time an operation (which happens to be rdpmc). The program is run on x86_64 VM, in a resource group of two Linux VMs, the other one is always hungry for processing power.

When the program is run in the idle Linux VM (unlimited CPU), two output values are always the same (ie. elapsed real time and apparent one are the same). Which is understandable, two VMs use different CPU cores.

In unlimited mode, the resource group takes ~5 GHz. Now I limit CPU capacity of the group down to 1 GHz. This time two values increase, but still the same. I think when CPU is shared, real timer counter must go must faster than apparent counter, because one VM may sleep when the other one runs, not at the same speed. Am I missing something?

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdint.h>

inline uint64_t counter(int c)
{
   uint32_t low, high;
   __asm__ __volatile__("rdpmc" : "=a" (low), "=d" (high) : "c" (c));
   return (uint64_t)high << 32 | (uint64_t)low;
}
int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
   int i;
   uint64_t t1, t2, t3, t4;

   while (1)
   {
      t1 = counter(0x10001);
      t2 = counter(0x10002);
      for (i = 0; i < 1000000; i++)
         t3 = counter(0x10002);
      t4 = counter(0x10001);
      printf("%lu %lu\n", (t4 - t1)/1000000, (t3 - t2)/1000000);
   }
   return 0;
}

vcenter inaccessible

Hi,

Suddenly my vcenter was inaccessible, though IP is still pingable and I can see the login screen since it's a vm to a host and I can open a console to look at it.

So far I've reboot the vm and host but same thing. Not sure where to go next?

Some added info:

I'm using VCSA 6.7

Both hosts connected to vcenter and it was working before but yesterday when I turned on 2 hosts and the vcenter vm, it's unable to access the web gui of the vcenter

Thanks

Issues w/ 6.7 and windows megaraid LSA

$

   Bear with me, this is my first day w/ this software as I normally work w/ Hyper-V.  For the life of me I cannot get the AVAGO LSI storage authority to log into my host to display info.  I get the following "Error Code:65537 : Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password"  I've confirmed correct credentials to log into host.

  I did get it to work once oddly and it hasn't since.  What I do notice is in ESXi under  Host | Monitor | hardware | storage | everything but memory is Unknown.

Hardware:  Lenovo Thinkserver TS460

RAID controller: embedded MR9340-8i

Things I have tried/done:

  • Followed instructions and added host file to guest OS.  Both VMWARE and GUEST OS can ping each others host names
  • Disabled firewall on VMWARE per lenovo driver install instructions and confirmed disabled
  • Ensured that LSA detects VMWARE host
  • Ensure slpd and sfcbd-watchdog services were running.  restarted both as a diag step
  • ran enum_instances cim_system lsi/lsimr13 and got the following so I assume it is at least seeing it?

LSIESG_MegaRAIDHBA.CreationClassName="LSIESG_MegaRAIDHBA",Name="500605B00DD3F6E0"\

Name = 500605B00DD3F6E0

CreationClassName = LSIESG_MegaRAIDHBA

What is installed:

VMWARE

  • LSIPROVIDER:  LSI Provider for ESX Server 500.04.V0.71-0004 (From broadcom site)
  • RAID DRIVER:  Version: 7.705.10.00-1OEM.670.0.0.8169922 (From lenovo site)

GUEST OS (2019 Server)

  • LSI Storage Authority 004.184.000.000
  • MegaRAID 7.7

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

How to query esxi hosts local boot drive free space

I would like to monitor with Nagios all esxi hosts free space on the local boot drive no matter it is a hard drive or a sd card.

How can I query this information with command line tools?

I don't want to use connect to ssh, I prefer powercli or vmware sdk solution.

no claim disk for vsan witness

Hi, here's my setup, we have a Dell FX2 server with 3 SLEDS and 1 storage. Storage was set to Split Dual Hosts

SLED1 - has RAID controller and disk 0-7

SLED2 - has RAID controller and disk 8-16

SLED3 - has no RAID controller but has 2x 200GB internal SSD drives

So I set the 3 SLEDS by installing ESXI 6.7 Update 1. I installed ESXi VCSA on SLED 3's disk 1, I deployed vsan witness appliance on SLED 3's disk 2. Procedures I've done:

1. create a datacenter

2. create a cluster

3. add host 1 and host 2 (SLED 1 and SLED 2) on the cluster, enabled HA and vsan . After successfully adding the first 2 hosts, I went ahead and proceed with the 3rd step is to configure vsan cluster. BTW, I used the Quickstart wizard in configuring from adding the host in configuring vsan.

4. Host 3 or SLED 3 is not part of the cluster

The first part of the Cluster configuration is about Distributed Switches and I set both vmnic0 and vminic1 to both DSwitch, didn't modify anything under storage traffic, under Advanced options > vsan options I set to Two Host vSAN cluster. under Claim disk, I set the HDD for the storage and flash disk for the cache tier, next is letting me select the witness host which I did, the next part is where I'm kinda lost, it's looking to Claim Disks for witness host and I have nothing on the list.

Not sure where I missed or what part of the configuration I missed???

Thanks

Jeff
