Configure Pre-fix for Syslog in ESXI ( VMware Log Insight )

$

Hello Everyone, Question about SysLog configuration and using products VMware LogInsight and Splunk

Goal:  I would like to add a pre-fix ESXI syslog configuration , this will help determine which ESXI hosts come from different vCenters depending on the prefix / Tag that i put.

For example:  vcenter1-Hostname.domain.com

                        vcenter2-hostname.domain.com

If there are prefixes that i can add or attach to the actual hostname that appears in Vmware Log Insight then i can determine the vCenters and seperate them out further for other team purposes.

Thank you,

Intel VT-x is disabled or not supported!

So everything is in a lab environment & all virtualized. I have two ESXI boxes and I am trying to get Vcenter 6 nested on my second ESXI box, I have it on my first ESXI but I need it on a second one to cluster two data centers together and set up high availability. Though whenever I either export an OVF and import Vcenter 6 on the second ESXI or try to install it on the second ESXI I keep getting the "This machine is configured for 64 bit operating system & Intel VT-x is disabled or not supported error." error. I can't remember exactly how I got it up and running on the first ESXI.

I have tried a variety of things at this point and searched all over google with no luck. I have gone through the bois of the second ESXI and nothing pertaining to enabling Hyper-V. After importing the OVF I have tried to "expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS" and all that gets me is a "Failed to reconfigure-specified parameter was bit correct: unit number" error. I checked in the ESXI's virtual machine settings under CPU/MMU Virtualization spot and its on Automatic also tried enabling this setting the Vcenter virtual machine. Also under CPUID mask I have it set to expose NX flag to guest. Also tried a few different things on the internet I found but I know I didn't do anything to special to get it working on the first ESXI. Both ESXI boxes are 6.0.0 and the second ESXI is basically the exact same thing as the first, besides whatever I did to the first ESXI to get Vcenter installed.

So if anyone has any idea's or experienced something like this before any insight would be so greatly appreciated I am for the most part out of idea's. Thanks.

Windows Server 2008 r2 in place upgrade to server 2012 r2

Hello Gurus - I have a test environment vmware host that i have a few windows server 2008 R2 on. I did a in place upgrade on one from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 Datacenter that worked fine. Now i have a microsoft web server 2008 r2 that I am doing the same thing as well. This time i go thru the upgrade steps then it reboots to the 2012 Windows icon with the dots spinning below it. It does that for about a minute or two then I get the "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." message. Then it reboots to the same screen and does the same thing again. I looked online but there is so many different answers to this and i hate to have to rebuild a 2012 web server and migrate everything over. I have reverted the upgrade back to a vm snapshot i took before the upgrade. My vmware tools is up to date and i have checked on the microsoft technet but it seems to that it could be on the vm side. Im not sure because i was able to do a in place upgrade on one machine fine until i got to this one. Any help or direction i should take on this? Thanks!!

Can I use the same license key for multiple free ESXi installations?

Hello,

Last year I installed ESXi 6.5 free version on one of our small office servers. Now we need to use it for another server. The 6.7 download is available after I login. I cannot find another page or link to create another free license for the new installation.

QUESTION: Can I use the same license key for multiple free ESXi installations? If not, what is the exact link for creating a new license key for the new host esxi installation?

Thank you.

Error when installing VMWare tools on Ubuntu VM

Error on [hostname]:The required VMware Tools ISO image does not exist or is inaccessible.

See the error stack for details on the cause of this problem.

Error Stack

Call "VirtualMachine.MountToolsInstaller" for object "[hostname]" on ESXi "172.20.2.170" failed.

vix error code = 21001

Unable to install VMware Tools. An error occurred while trying to access image file "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/linux.iso" needed to install VMware Tools: 2 (No such file or directory). If your product shipped with the VMware Tools package, reinstall VMware ESX, then try again to install the VMware Tools package in the virtual machine.

I followed this article https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1037405 and can clearly see the symlink in the ESXi cli [isoimages -> /productLocker/vmtools] but install still isnt working. This is on my windows VMs as well. ESXi 6.0 U2 installed on  flash drive.

Does anyone know how to resolve this error so I can install VMWare tools?

How to check CPU frequency in ESXi

$

Hello! I have an ESXi host with a 2x Xeon Gold 6130 the base freq. of the CPU is 2.1Ghz now anywhere I check (ESXi web client, vCenter, SSH) it says the clock speed is at 2.1Ghz even though the CPU's all core turbo is 2.8Ghz as it can be checked here: https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/intel/xeon_gold/6130 , 1 core turbo is 3.7Ghz.

I have the servers CPU utilization at 70-90% and it still says everywhere its at 2.1Ghz and I cannot believe it is really at that speed since I have turbo boost enabled, ESXi power management set to high performance, and in the servers BIOS it is set to maximum performance. (C States are enabled aswell if it changes anything)

Can anyone give me a clue how to check the frequency accurately like the exact speed of it at the time of checking, or if these infos are accurate then why I have only 2.1Ghz all core speed?

Thanks for the help.

VMWare ESXi Installation Transfer

Good day to all,

Recently, our 5-year old IBM System x3100 M4 will shutdown unexpectedly after running for about 10 minutes my estimate. There is no error reported during boot if there's a hard disk failure or something.

Can I transfer the hard disks from this IBM System which have the VMWare ESXi installation to a typical computer with Intel processor?

Thank you,

Allan

Video dazu: https://take.ms/zAYxv

ESXi 6.7 Performance graphs only show the last few minutes

This is my second install of ESXi 6.7 U1 and I'm seeing the same problem. The performance monitoring graph on the host and on individual VMs only shows the last few minutes, no matter how long it has been up. This is the case with all counters (CPU/Network/Memory/Disk). Screenshots attached. Running the free license. I have tried restarting hostd, running with/without NTP, and, obviously, a full re-install. Any suggestions?

Hi,

After a power failure, one datastore become disconnected in our esxi host. It's raid5 consists of 3 disks. I book with an Ubuntu live CD and I can get following information:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sde

Disk /dev/sde: 3.3 TiB, 3599451029504 bytes, 7030177792 sectors

Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disklabel type: gpt

Disk identifier: 543D936A-AE82-4ABE-A2FB-ED296E861BC1

Device     Start        End    Sectors  Size Type

/dev/sde1   2048 7030177758 7030175711  3.3T VMware VMFS

but when I try to mount with vmfs-fuse it outputs following error:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo vmfs-fuse /dev/sde1 /mnt/vmfs

VMFS VolInfo: invalid magic number 0x00000000

VMFS: Unable to read volume information

Trying to find partitions

Is it possiblt to get my data back? continuum, I see you help so many guys for similar issue, so try to @you to see if you can help :-)

Routing VMKernel iSCSI Network

$

I hope I'm not asking a useless question.

An ESXi server has several iSCSI hard disks connected to it via a storage network (Synology NAS). The corresponding

IP addresses are of course different from the normal network.

Due to this fact I don't have direct access to the Synology NAS anymore. Is there any routing tip (Vmkernel) how I can still access the management interface of the Synology NAS without having to connect to the storage switch? Synology NAS unfortunately only have one network card.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

I am runing IBM system x 3690 ESX 4.1.0,433742 and getting a following warning

"System Management Software 1 SEL Fullness: Log almost full"

I could not find any issue by looking at the IMM logs.

Need to add an existing local datastore (from before a re-install) to the new install of ESXi 6.7 host

Hi,

Need ASAP help. I'm not a VM expert by any means.

Had a power outage, some VMs on my ESXi 6.5 did not boot up after the host powered back up (were not set to auto). My AD integration was broken AND my root password stopped working a few weeks ago. I did not have a chance to address it. This morning I tried unsupported methods of resetting the root password with no luck. After a few hours I decided to reinstall ESXi, was originally 6.5, but I decided to install  6.7 (ESXi build number: 13006603). During the install I could see both datastores from the previous install. I Installed ESXi on the same instillation datastore as the previous install, leaving alone the other 26TB datasore. Now I can see both datastores if browse to Storage then Devices, but only see the system datastore under Datastores. I need to add (or mount) the 26TB datastore back to the host without formatting it, to hopefully be able to register the VMs on the host.

I looked everywhere and cannot find an article with my specific situation.

Please help.

Hello everyone,

I have 8 identical ESXi servers I am deploying a new Cisco CSPC OVA file to.  7 of the servers were successfully in deploying the OVA file, but one system in Singapore keeps tripping a Segmentation Fault when trying to deploy the OVA.   Here is the command and out put I receive when attempting to do this.

Opening OVA source: /vmfs/volumes/datastore/Collector-2.8.1.2-B-02.ova

Opening VI target: vi://root@127.0.0.1:443/

Deploying to VI: vi://root@127.0.0.1:443/

Segmentation fault

[root@STCP-NETGMI01:/vmfs/volumes/5c2e3037-03cdfc01-4fe8-246e96bd4b80/ovftool]

I am not sure why this one system is being stubborn, its setup the same way as the other 7 that successfully deployed.  Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time and attention!
