Hi~

ESXi 6.5 running on Dell R620 server.

I've found logs in vmkernel.log file.

I think these logs had showed up when txhang problem has occurred.

What is the problem and how to solve this problem?

We encounter a problem that the VM vMotion can not work due to "Failed waiting for data. Error 195887105. Failure.". We have try many times, the error is same. We have check the vMotion connectivity by ping, each host can ping successful with the vMotion vmknic's IP. It confused us that we did not know meaning of the error code.

By check the  vmkernel.log, we found in content in tartget host:

ESXi 6.7 U3, AMD 3700X, X570 Motherboard, PSOD when booting

Hi,
I wanted to try ESXi 6.7 U3 with on an unsupported system with AMD components:

System configuration:

  • 3700X
  • Motherboard: ASUS Pro WS X570-Ace (latest BIOS 1302 installed, AGESA 1004 B)
  • 4 x 16 GiB ECC UDIMM DDR4-2400 (Samsung OEM)
  • Quadro P2000
  • USB Thumb drive with ESXi 6.7 U3 setup
  • Empty/Erased SATA SSD intended for ESXi
  • Nothing else
  • CSM disabled/UEFI boot-only

What didn't help:

  • CMOS resetting the BIOS didn’t change a thing (made sure to enable virtualization support afterwards since for some reason the default setting is leaving it disabled)
  • Installing ESXi 6.7 U3 on a different system (ASRock Rack X470D4U) to the SATA SSD, updating it to the current version (ESXi-6.7.0-20191204001-standard (Build 15160138)) and then trying to boot it on the X570-Ace also didn’t change anything
  • Enabling CSM and switch to Legacy boot-only

Any idea what's causing this issue when booting ESXi?

esxi-psod-asus_pro_ws_x570-ace.jpg

I know that in general ESXi can work fine with Ryzen 3000 (as tested with my other system with an X470 motherboard that also uses a Ryzen 3000 CPU).

Thanks for any assistance!

ESXi hosts periodically trying to reconnect old NFS shares

$

Hello all,

I noticed three of my ESXi hosts are trying to connect to old NFS shares that were removed.

They are not defined via GUI or present in esxcli storage nfs list or esxi storage core device detached list

However, I found them defined in /etc/vmware/esxi.conf

I tried manually editing them out and reloading vpxa, hostd and nfsgssd but the machine with NFS shares still shows attempts to connect. I suppose rebooting the hosts will help, but I don't want to do that for obvious reasons.

I lose connection to ESXi host.

After resetting my ESxi configuration, I can no longer access both the nodes and the VMs even after I assigned static IP addresses to the hosts. Please how can I fix this?

on a new installation of esxi 6.0.   This has to be some kind of false positive or is there a setting during installation i left enabled and missed?  my other 8 didn't report this back.  Saddly all i have is the vulerability and what IP address.

any thoughts on this one?

and to be clear the IP address is of the host and no i do not have any novel guests

I have (or rather, will have) a Windows 2016 server.  Can I install ESXi as a type 2 hypervisor under Windows 2016?

If so, can I control/manage this instance of ESXi with vCenter Server installed remotely?

Kickstart unattended install with vendor supplied ISO

Does anyone know if it's OK to use a kickstart install with a vendor supplied ESXi installer ISO?  I've got a bunch of HP servers to load up and was thinking about saving my self some time by just skipping the EULA, password, and the next, next, next prompts.  But I was sure if using a kickstart file would overwrite anything special the custom ISO injects during install.  Anyone know?

Blacklisting certain USB devices from the usbarbitrator

$

Greetings!

I am using ESXi 6.7.0 Update 3 (Build 15160138) on an Intel Nuc to host my VMs wit the free ESXi hypervisor license.

The Nuc has an internal M2 SSD. As storage was running low, I've added another external SSD via a JMicron USB2SATA adapter.

Basically I was following this guide: https://www.virten.net/2016/11/usb-devices-as-vmfs-datastore-in-vsphere-esxi-6-5/

So, disabling usbarbitrator, adding SSD as storage device, etc.

Everything works as expected.

However, now I cannot anymore passthrough USB devices into a VM as the arbitrator service is no longer running:

[root@esxi:~] esxcli hardware usb passthrough device list

Bus  Dev  VendorId  ProductId  Enabled  Can Connect to VM                  Name

---  ---  --------  ---------  -------  ---------------------------------  -------------------------------------------------------------------

1    2    76b       3021          true  no (usbarbitrator is not running)  OmniKey AG CardMan 3121

1    3    8087      a2a           true  no (usbarbitrator is not running)  Intel Corp.

1    4    152d      1561         false  no (usbarbitrator is not running)  JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS561U

Specificially I would like to make the OmniKey CardMan available as an USB device in a VM. The JMicron device at the bottom is the adapter that connects my SSD via USB3.0 to the host.

Now, lets start the usbarbitrator again:

[root@esxi:~] /etc/init.d/usbarbitrator start

UsbUtil: Attempting to reserve for VMkernel USB adapter(s):

Errors:

Rescan complete, however some dead paths were not removed because they were in use by the system. Please use the 'storage core device world liommand to see the VMkernel worlds still using these paths.

usbarbitrator started

Hostd must be restarted to enable USB passthrough functionality on any VM. After hostd is restarted, to enable USB passthrough functionality oowered on VM, the VM must be powered off and powered on again.

[root@esxi:~] esxcli hardware usb passthrough device list

Bus  Dev  VendorId  ProductId  Enabled  Can Connect to VM  Name

---  ---  --------  ---------  -------  -----------------  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1    2    76b       3021          true  yes                OmniKey AG CardMan 3121

1    3    8087      a2a           true  yes                Intel Corp.

1    4    152d      1561          true  yes                JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JMS561U

This looks promising, as I am now apparently able to "mount" the Omnikey into a VM.

However, I can no longer access the UI anymore once the usbarbitrator has been restarted. I presume this is because the SSD/storage device is now kind of blocked.

As soon as I stop the arbitrator service again, the UI is responsive again.

So I assume I need to kind of mask/blacklist the JMicron adapter from the USB arbitrator so he allows the mounting of all the connected USB devices but NOT of the JMicron. The JMicron should not be arbitrated but be available exclusively to the host.

How can I achieve this? Which commands do I need to issue?

As the message on the screen states I also tried to restart the hostd service, however the ESXi was then no longer accessible at all, giving me an error when I opened the webpage:

503 Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [N7Vmacore4Http16LocalServiceSpecE:0x0000001987322480] _serverNamespace = / action = Allow _port = 8309)

After a reboot he UI was available again, but the arbitrator was again disabled.

I found these commands but am not sure whether this is the correct way to go: Re: Disable USB support on ESXi OS or BIOS, both?

You could disable the usb-storage module by using

esxcli system module set -m usb-storage -e false

( followed by

  vmkload_mod -u usb-storage

or a reboot to make the change effective )

This would prevent the usage of any USB storage devices without affecting KVM.

I am not sure whether I can issue this command without doing any harm.

Kindly advise how to proceed.

Thank you!

ESXi 6.5 Disable TLSv1.0

$

Hi,

I need to disable TLSv1.0 for PCI on an ESXi server running 6.5. I can do this on my 6.0 servers easily enough using the following commands

esxcli system settings advanced set -o /UserVars/ESXiVPsDisabledProtocols -s "tlsv1"

esxcli system settings advanced set -o /UserVars/ESXiRhttpproxyDisabledProtocols -s "tlsv1"

esxcli system settings advanced set -o /UserVars/VMAuthdDisabledProtocols -s "tlsv1"

When it comes to 6.5 I believe these do not work and from what I can gather you need to use a tool whilst running vCenter. I do not have vCenter running and therefore need to look at a possible solution outside of this.

Can anyone confirm if there is a method to disable this?

Regards

Chris

Do you turn off drive optimization in Windows VMs?

$

0

I had a situation where

  • Veeam backup job was running and it creates snapshot on a VM
  • Windows disk optimization ran while the snapshot was present
  • The snapshot was removed
  • The ESXi datastore completely filled up

This is a known combination of events that causes this, VMware Knowledge Base

One way to resolve this is to turn off automatic disk optimization in Windows. Do you do this?

ESXi 6.7 directly connected to storage with Balance-ALB & 2 NICs

$

I am curious if this is even possible, from what I have read it should be. I am trying to connect an ESXi 6.7 host to a QNAP device, here is the catch I am not using a switch . I have a ESXi host directly connected to a QNAP using 2 x 10GB GBIC's.

The QNAP is configured with port trunking on two of it's NICs using Balance-ALB. (I use 2 other x ethernet NICs for management of this device).

In ESXi I have one vSwitch, with 2 port groups:

  • PG1 has vNIC0 active / vNIC1 unused.
  • PG2 has vNIC0 unused / vNIC1 active.

I can ping the IP of the NIC bond on the QNAP from one of the vmk ports but not the other

QNAP shows an iSCSI connection from one of my vmk's IPs. I cannot locate the storage device when I scan the HBA/VMFS though. I am using a static iSCSI target.

Firmware appears to be up to date as well...(shown above)

As I mentioned, I've attempted to install via Assisted Install by provisioning through Intelligent Provisioning portal, and also by loading the ISO from virtual drive and booting from it. Both methods yield different errors/issues and I'm really hoping that it's not because I am using non HP drives because their products are overpriced and do not match my eventual design plan. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Any way to patch an ISO from build 14320388 to 15160138?

Hi,

I'm using ESXi free in a home server / home lab environment and have been running happily on version 6.7 but would like to update it to the most recent U3 build. I made a clone of the USB it runs on just fine, and was going to use the "install over the top" method to update it (i.e. boot from the most recent iso and install over the top of one of the cloned ESXi operating sticks, which I'm lead to believe will essentially do an in-place upgrade).

So, I downloaded the most recent ISO available on the website here, build 14320388, but when it boots it comes up with an error about "page allocation error: out of resources". searching these forums has identified that this build has an issue with UEFI boot, but the newer builds fix this. The problem is that the newer builds are not available in ISO format, just links to zip files of binaries (here).

So my question is, how do i update the ISO to the newest build so i can boot from it and update my system? Or is there any other simple easy way to update ESXi free?

Thanks in advance!

Embedded esxi storage partitioning

We recently got a server from Dell that had ESXi 6.7 embedded (SD-card) and it's my first time using such a server.

I've always been installing vsphere ESXi manually.

The server uses local storage only and there's no shared storage.

When I was setting it up, I noticed that the datastore wasn't present so I clicked on "new datastore" and when I got to the "select partitioning options", it showed

1. EFI system

2. Basic Data

From the top drop down, if I select "Use full disk" the EFI system would go away.

One would typically use the "use full disk" option right?

And I also noticed that the scratch partition didn't exist either.

Can I select "use full disk" and create a scratch partition manually afterwards?

Thanks
